I watched Rush earlier tonight and got a bit misty eyed got to admit, seeing that squabble between two men transform into this beautiful rivalry and mutual respect, mixed with the intensity at the starting line and during the race, it was just great, tragic and beautiful.

Pro-Wrestling does this all the time (in b4 red neck). They will bring back an beloved "legend" like Hulk Hogan or Steve Austin to get the audience to come. This is called a cheap pop (basically something that is guaranteed to make the crowd happy). They bring the "legends" on the show because the bosses know that the current younger people suck at their job. The younger people then get a "rub" from the legends (working with someone to gain more credibility). The legend eventually gets attacked by the bad guy for some cheap heat (something to easily anger the crowd)
That's why Han is going to die. Han dying = cheap heat, which equals false sympathy from the crowd, which is a major rub for Ren.
