Hell yes it is. Though you won't fully appreciate it unless you've read both Harry Potter and Chronicles of Narnia, it's an affectionate satire of both, as well as a roman à clef tale about emerging adulthood and existential confusion that comes with it.

I read the former, but never the latter. When I was younger, I was more of a science fiction kind of guy, with Asimov, Herbert, Pohl and Gene Wolfe being my main reading.

I'll give it a shot anyway, just recently finished rereading Sabriel.
