What was the point of hiring such a legendary, talented actor, and then giving him absolutely nothing to work with and no way to utilize his talent?

Not just Christopher Lee, but Samuel l Jackson, Natalie Portman, ian mcdiarmid and so on.

Why hire actors and give them no way to act? Wouldn't it have been cheaper to hire nobodies?
>>
Well Christopher Lee is dead, that's why he hasn't been getting many parts.
>>
>>62903723
You better be kidding about Ian McDiarmid.
He is probably the only redeeming quality of the entire prequel trilogy.
>>
Multiple actors like Greg Proops, Peter Serafinowicz, and Terence Stamp have said that Star Wars was among the worst paying jobs they've ever had. But they took it because they either loved the original movies or they hoped the exposure would help their career. George lowballed everyone.
>>
>>62903723
Peter Cushing didn't get many lines or much screentime in A New Hope. Ian McDiarmid didnt get to do much in RotJ.

underutilizing good actors is a star wars tradition
>>
>>62903790
Only because he realized early on how ridiculous the scripts were, and by ROTS he finally decided to stop being serious and just ham it up as much as possible.

You can tell Ewan McGregor does the same thing. Obi-Wan is overacted as hell by ROTS.
>>
While well known, Samuel L Jackson was hardly legendary, and Natalie Portman was still at that point a talented nobody. Ian McDiarmid worked on the original trilogy so why wouldn't he be on board?

Neeson, Lee, MacGregor, and Jackson were really the only high-profile stars at that time, and money was literally no concern in the production of the prequels because Lucas was comfortable off the OT profits, the boatloads of toys, and shit like Pixar, ILM, Skywalker Sound. That guy literally built his own movie industry during the production of the OT and he could do whatever the fuck he wanted with it.

Where was Liam Neeson's force ghost in ep 2 and 3?

Frank Langella is a superior actor tbqh boys, and would've been much better in the role. May have taken some shine from Sheev though
>>
>>62903874
George having to write around Liam Neeson totally refusing to do more movies is one of the funniest side bits of the prequel trilogy.
>>
>>62903827
it's telling that the best performances in the prequels were by stage actors, who are used to exaggerating

Hershlag is a great actress. Much better than your waifu
>>
>>62903951
Neeson hated the experience of working with Lucas so much that he briefly became depressed and considered dropping out of acting altogether
>>
>>62903723
Dooku was a potentially interesting character; there's that scene where he's actually telling Obi Wan the truth.

Him being a wayward Jedi would have worked better than him being a Sith. In fact Dooku killing Maul then going truly dark would have worked better.

Lee had to do that awful dialogue in AtoC where he explains that he is going to use his lightsaber now.
>>
>>62903923
His claim was that he was busy though. He however did return to do the episodes for the cartoons that served the same purpose.

>>62903874
He doesn't have a force ghost. It's explained because he couldn't maintain a corporeal form since his mastery of preserving his identity was incomplete.
>>
>>62904019
IMO he could have worked better as his own person, a fallen jedi rather than a sith lord under Palpatine's thumb.
>>
>>62904011
Lucas once said that you could use digital technology to take one actor's "best take" and edit it into another actor's "best take" to get the best performances.

Full Retard right there.
Reacting is a large part of acting, George.
>>
>>62904011
Why did he agree to do an episode of the clone wars?
>>
>>62904189
No Lucas.
No Green Screen.
>>
>>62903997
but what if she is my waifu.
>>
>>62903723
Lucas said he was going to have a largely unknown cast...then went back on that. R2 and 3PO were originally only meant to appear towards the end of the PT. Episode 2 was going to be a love story with little action (instead had a huge spazzy action set-piece taking up the entire 3rd act).

He could have made whatever he fucking wanted yet seemed to make the most bland shit imaginable instead.
>>
>Christopher Lee
He was obviously there for more pottery. It rhymes with the casting of Peter Cushing in A New Hope.

>Samuel L. Jackson
He was just horribly miscast. Honestly, if they just had to fit Jackson in some where, I would have liked to see him play Jango Fett. I think that would have been a more appropriate role for him. Fans probably would have been pissed off by the idea that Boba Fett is black though.

>Natalie Portman
She had plenty of chances to act. In Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones, it was entirely her who dropped the ball. Her acting was fucking horrible. In Revenge of the Sith though, her dialogue itself was significantly worse, so you can't just blame her for the delivery in that movie.

>Ian McDiarmid
Ian did an amazing job in all three movies. Especially in the third one. What the fuck is your problem?
>>
>>62904173
they do that all the time in real movies, they just cut away instead of putting them on screen at the same time
>>
>>62903745
He's only dead for tax purposes.
>>
>>62903896
now there's an example of wasting a good actor

>>62904298
Samuel L should've played a more important Darth Maul who doesn't die in the first movie
>>
>>62905103
not really, he was perfect for the role. Polanksi cast him because of his famous scene as Skeletor fyi

Star Wars has a lot more to do with the archetype and role of a character, than with a detailed summary of their emotions and attitudes.

Dooku could have been given lines about how he hated what the senate had become, the day he knew he would leave the Jedi, how he knew his apprentice would agree with his decision, how deluded Obi-Wan is about the Reublic, how stupid his followers on Geonosis are, why the Separatist movement can still defeat the Emperor, etc. etc. and so forth, and if it was any other director, we qould have gotten those lines...

...but instead we get Obi-Wan's plodding detective drama, the fight with Fett, the assembly line scene, and Yoda's laser sword fight. All essentially unnecessary ways of showing off technology.

From a character perspective, only the highly-democratic Obi-Wan should have fought Count Dooku.

Oh, and the most obvious monologue that might have been written for Lee:

He might have explained he decision to procure the clones for a coming war against the republic, and his quite public role as leader of the Separatists....

He could then explain why these decisions essentially granted them victory before the Clone Wars had begun by explaining how outmatched the Jedi are... But that doesn't come across either, because there seem to be more than enough Jedi.
