Plus the army they were building was obviously intended for warfare, not a peaceful secession.
Then there's the issue of secession at all. We never hear what their reasons are for wanting to secede, we just know they apparently want to. We don't even know what their actual goal is in the war. If they captured Coruscant in RotS, would they win? What would they do if they won? Instill themselves as the new leaders of the Republic? Or just secede as they supposedly want to? What happens to the jedi if they win?
The entire thing is so badly written, we don't even know why they are actually fighting.
