forbidden room was...... yikes I don't know
just obnoxious. not as experimental as it liked to act, and too bogged down in weird steampunk ironic. 'gentleman' humor. fucking moustaches and epic burlesque

maybe I'm bringing too much contemporary culture to what is clearly a pastiche of silent film but it just made me gag mostly. I laughed once and I can't remember what it was at ... something during the segment of the dad who's died and his wife doesn't know he's resurrected or whatever because she's blind? i forget

i ... i guess i enjoyed it, when it worked it really worked. captured a fever dream/psychedelic trip better than I've maybe ever seen in a movie the way it distracts itself and becomes obsessed with realities within realities and feels like a hundred years is passing, but i also cringed at a lot of it too. the cutesy 'look how bad these effects are lol' shit got to me. and this guy (pic related) was shit. family-guy tier jokes here

I dunno man, 2013 had some pretty good movies. I don't love everything I listed there, but most I'm sure you could call at least solid.
>>
>>62897978
Most of these are IMDb core
>>
>>62896608
where did you see it?
>>
>>62898018
You're not wrong. Most (all) of them are motion pictures logged as such on The Internet Movie Database.

Were you looking for something else?
What do you consider a good year?

Avengers Age of Ultron even for ten makes you look fucking retarded
>>

Night Moves sucks and is a continuing indicator that Reichardt has lost it.

Have some love for liking Prisoners and Only Lovers Left Alive. Stoner-rock/post-rock soundtrack to that movie perfectly captures that exotic, lazy, melancholy attitude of the film
>>
I'm really going to have to check out Blackhat.
>>
>>62898143
I liked a lot of elements of it but I found the second half unsatisfying.

>Night Moves sucks and is a continuing indicator that Reichardt has lost it.
Hmmm.. assuming you haven't seen her shorts and first film yet to see wide distribution (feel free to correct me if I'm wrong) you're only working with four movies here. If Night Moves is a 'continuing indicator' I'm guessing you didn't like Meek's Cutoff either? (I loved Meeks, personally)

When do you figure she 'lost it' and what was 'it' exactly? I thought Old Joy was super unremarkable and while Wendy and Lucy was top form it was way too fucking manipulative imo to be taken too seriously.
>>
>>62897802
The Gift sucked shit. Haven't seen any of the others.
>>
So how did you guys improve your lives this year?

I know you didn't waste it like last year.
>>
>>62896650

>>
>>62898268
I tried LSD and finished Moby Dick
>>
Looking back, this is probably the worst year for movies since 2008.
>>
>>62898298

Was the LSD fun? I'm too scared to try, I heard it can have permanent effects.
>>
>>62898227
I've seen her shorts but not first film.

All her films are all in the same minor key which has become predictable and fairly creatively inert over time. Even when expanding her scope and cast, as in Meek's, it feels like a 2 person play where the destination isn't all that interesting.

Night Moves was far too ineffectual for me, especially coming off Meek's. Her style doesn't lend itself well to paranoia or anything remotely tense.
>>
>>62898255
nice
>>
>>62898351
It was. It can, like most things in life, go wrong if you aren't smart about it.

Moby Dick was better though, and you can read that without running any risk of adverse effects.
>>
>>62896939
Yeah IKTF. I spend too much time catching up on older stuff to watch anything new.
>>
>>62898351
it is fun but don't mess with it if your brain chemistry is already giving you trouble, like you're on antidepressants or something

source: i watched 250+ movies this year desu senpai
>>

2) Southpaw
3) Ex-Machina

>>

The Peanuts Movie blows the fuck out of everything.

But no one's seen it. It's so fucking good. God damn.

Hm, I sort of disagree. I felt the most criminal elements of Night Moves, the murder for one, came off wonky, and I agree with the relatively weak handling of paranoia, but the tension in the first half really worked for me, and I think that's probably what saved it.

I'm curious what you thought of Old Joy and Wendy and Lucy though. Wendy and Lucy was like a 21st century Liberal Bresson film. I liked it, but at the end of the day it felt kind of cheap.

>being excited for upcoming movies is wrong
>>
>>62898478
I was crazy for Wendy and Lucy, by far her best work. The hopelessness and desolation is a perfect fit with her sparse style. The Bresson comparison is v.apt, but to me it's practically a Dardennes film. Michelle Williams kills it.

I liked the liberal political conscience of Meek's too. It came out around the same time as Obama's election, which made the racial aspects it all the more relevant. It has some of the prettiest dissolves too.

But honestly? Once you've seen a Reichardt, there's very little reason to see them again. They're simple to a fault.
>>
>>62898591
>But honestly? Once you've seen a Reichardt, there's very little reason to see them again.

Good point. Only Meek's I've revisited.
