"It stood for the first act of critical, political consciousness that Italy had experienced. Italy up to that point had no history, no unified history as a nation, only a history as many divided little peoples, divided little countries, and with a great gap between north and south."

Is there a definitive split between the two or is that just being too anal? Could Pasolini, if he was to be categorized, be placed in the Second Wave, despite not really wanting to define his work as Neorealism at all? And where would other Italian directors rank? Is Fellini post-Neorealism, or had he developed a truly unique style of his own? What are some other film movements that have been officially categorized and what do you think of them?

directors can not want to be classified all they want. They usually are. Neoralism is a particularly contentious term, is it just films about poor italians struggling?

Accattone is clearly of the second wave.

North is more "german" and industrial, South is what people imagine when you say Italy. South is a shit hole.

Italy is still divided.

Neorealism is boring.

people love making art when they're broke/hate the government, which were two prevailing facts of life in post-war Italy
