Basic/Aurebesh is simply english, it´s just that the letters look different and are called different.

The latin alphabet exists as the High Galactic alphabet so you could say they based the ships names on that. But who cares, it was shit made up as a retcon because not every SW related work used Aurebesh and they still wanted to make it all work as one canon that made sense back then.

Except the A-wing looks like an H and the E wing doesn't look like an E. The only ship that really looks like an A is the imperial shuttle.
So of the 6 letter-wing ships, 3 look like the letter and 3 don't. Not to mention that the naming convention isn't consistent among the 3 that do look like their letters.
The x-wing looks like an x from the front and back and is the shape of the actual wings while the Y and V wings look like their letters from the top and bottom and is the shape of the ship's whole body, one of which doesn't even have wings.

The names A-wing and B-wing are never said in Return of the Jedi, the names come from ILM naming the filming models, and moved from there to the merchandise.
