Didn't grew up around VHS and my family already get rid of our VCR when I was like 2 or 3, so I want to ask:
is it true that movies on VHS looks better than the ones on DVDs, like the image and the sound is crispier and it's like it have actual soul?
Is it worth to start a VHS collection? I want to show some retro movie to my friends at friday night, I was wondering if an old TV set and a lot of tapes could be neat, I think they look super cool and I'm quite fed up with streaming and netflix that, to me, is too commercial oriented. They even sell VHS remasters of new movies, they're quite expensive but I think they worth the price.
>>
an old vcr is actually pretty fun if you like watching cheesy 90s action movies and whatnot.

Holy shit. Rlm was right. They predicted you hipster fuck will prefer vhs to Blu Ray and dvds. Fucking hipsters.
>>
It's crazy to me that there are people who never experienced VHS.

The answer to your questions is no btw. VHS has a specific look and sound but it is definitely not better than DVD. Also VCR's put wear on the actual VHS tape so the quality of the video erodes over time. There is literally no reason to ever go back to VHS, you really didn't miss anything there.

This is b8 but ill bite

The sound and picture quality is much shittier than DVDs. Might be fun to collect though

I imagine this meme comes from people buying vinyl. But thats a little step up in quality in both sound and packaging. The only other physical alternative CDs, which is just obsolete if not more.
You can go to any walmart and get a lot of dvds or blu rays

the actual music equivalent to vhs is cassette tapes which will never make a come back just because it sounds shittier
>>
probably equivalent in pixels to a yify rip

CDs are coming back too eventually. think of it. theyre each little mini thumb drives of lossless music

No joke, I was at a Half Price Books a few months ago and there was this girl in her early 20s specifically looking for her favorite albums on cassette because she thought they sounded better. She had thick rimmed glasses and a flannel on too, fuck. It's like they're self-parodying at this point.

VHS was still used from 2000-2006. Even if op was born in 1997, he should remember shit from when he was 3-9, unless his parents whacked him in the head with a metal bat.

>>
>everyone believes this was real

If there was one good thing about VHS, it sure was easy to record something. One tape could go in your camcorder to record your precious family memories, and then you could pop it into the VCR to record something off the TV. Sure, you have DVRs now, but you can't really put something in your closet to save for a few years or let your friends borrow the tape to watch.
>>
I assume that image is photoshopped, but do they still release movies on VHS?
>>
>>62796025
I remember people recording long stints of TV on VHS, shows as well as commercials, to watch later. I actually tried to look online to see if I could find any of those old tapes for sale but I couldn't. I'd love to be able to sit down and experience some 90's TV again.

Is there a name for those kind of tapes? Does anyone know if there's a way to go about finding them?

yes some hipster productions do release blu-ray/vhs combos for their crowdfunded 80ies "hommage" memeflicks.

won't be going on for much longer though since VHS tapes are no longer produced. the last factory that still did recently shipped their last batch and closed.

There are some vaporware artists who sell music on casette tapes.

I disagree. Even with the theme Videodrome looks good enough to watch on a proper format

I mean, I can understand certain iconic albums that got released during the cassette era getting some collector's edition rerelease for an anniversary. But new albums? Hipsters pls go.

Casettes are better for lo-fi music since the shitty quality adds to it

To answer OP's question, no. On very few exceptions (Star Wars theatrical cuts is the only thing I can think of) the DVD is always going to be a higher quality than VHS.

That doesn't stop me from buying them though. VHS is a cost-affordable format for movies, I buy tons of movies that I haven't seen yet but don't want to dish out anywhere from five to twenty dollars for. The few that are still expensive are worth the price most of the time (pic related, Zombie and Maximum Overdrive cost me $10 a piece). Not only that but some titles never made it past the VHS format (Good luck finding the NSYNC/Britney Spears music video compilation on Blu-Ray). Plus, it's pretty fun if you drop online shopping and actually go out to different stores looking for rare tapes.
>>
only for movies that were never released on dvd

I don't think so.

The last movie to be released on VHS was "A History of Violence" in 2006. The last truckload of VHSes shipped in Christmas 2008. In 2005, about 40% of Americans polled said they still had a VHS player.
>>
>>62797556
I technically still have a VHS player. It hasn't been hooked up in years.

If you want to get into a novelty older format look into Laserdiscs as they actually have some cool features, excellent sound quality (often considered to have superior mixes to DVD), and decent analog picture quality that can be on par with lower end DVD's. The analog look is also different and often times more "film like" or closer to that old nostalgia look many of us grew up with without being completely garage like VCR.

They also have some advantages to modern DVD and Bluray in that there is no digital processing or flag checks for chapter skips and the like. You pop in a laserdisc and you can chapter skip instantly unlike 99% of Blurays and DVD's that force you to wait. You can also jump to the individual frames which is kinda crazy (as you can key in frame 1,357 and it will jump to that). They often feature multiple audio tracks with commentary as well.
