No, it wasn't foreign. It was an old dying bear that was exiled from the rest. It didn't go crazy, it attacked him because it couldn't gather fish anymore, and he was easy prey.
Also he wasn't "one with the bears", he covered himself in their scent and visited them during the period where they are still in hibernation mode, not hunting mode.
They were in a glazed over state and probably didn't see him as a predator so they left him alone.
