>>
The eye dust creatures thing was very silly, but Sleep No More was a pretty good episode.
Mark Gatiss should write comic books.

It still didn't feel like Doctor Who though.
None of Capaldi's episodes have felt like Doctor Who, I don't know why or how to explain it.
I can watch an Eccleston episode and then go all the way back to Tom Baker, and it'll feel like the same show.
But ever since the beginning of series 7 the show has felt very different somehow, and for the worse.

>>62780700
Moffat doesn't seem to realise Capaldi does a different kind of comedy than Smith. He's a drama actor and he's funny when he says inappropriate things or makes other uncomfortable.
He keeps giving him Smith lines of wacky random humor that Smith often used to blabber at a fast pace and Capaldi obviously doesn't quite know how to do those since he tries to make the character less of a caricature.

It's usually the case that the writer's voice starting to become obvious after a while. I thought RTD's characters were just as similar as Moffat's can be. Jackie and Donna were both man hungry, sassy, middle aged women down on their luck. Rose was down on her luck and in love with the Doctor. Martha had a more successful background but was bland as hell and in love with the Doctor. Rose, Donna and Martha all had bitchy mothers. All their speech patterns are same-y as well. Jack and Wilf were the only really memorable ones to me.

All the actors in Sleep No More were so wooden I thought the final twist was going to be that the Doctor and Clara were in a space game.

Sleep No More.jpg

I can't make any sense of Sleep No More. I feel like I need to sit down, and watch it a third time with a pen and some paper.

Was the footage actually real (i.e: recorded by Rasmussen through the airborne sleep dust, inside the Doctor Who universe)? Was it all real, or is it a mixture of real and fake? The whole "it was all a story" resolution leaves me confused about what exactly happened, and what didn't.

If all the footage is real, then why does the Doctor comment that the events that transpired seemed "like a story"? It's like he has an awareness of Rasmussen's plan. I'm not comfortable with this – if the Doctor knew what Rasmussen was up to, then none of the footage should exist. The Doctor would have destroyed it all to prevent everyone that watched it from becoming Sandmen.

I have a bunch of other niggling doubts, but I need to get them all straight in my head before I voice them.

>Was the footage actually real (i.e: recorded by Rasmussen through the airborne sleep dust, inside the Doctor Who universe

Yes.

He set shit up for there to be a mystery ( to lure in those soldier dudes and the audience as well), had the monsters attack but never too many to handle or run away from, had the floating capsule/pod thing for added mystery, lied about spores and patient zero and had it be a larger eye booger monster for climax, etc. Clara and the Doctor accidentally found themselves in his plot.

He recorded shit using floating eye boogers in the air and spliced it so there's not a lot of downtime/boring moment
>>
>>62782134

Everything that happened was real, but Rasmussen staged certain things to make it feel like a story that would keep people watching.

1. Rasmussen was waiting in a Morpheus pod for the rescue team, acting like he was hiding from the Sandmen. Obviously he didn't need to hide, but it made him seem like a victim.

2. Rasmussen made up all the shit about "spores" and how he wanted to send Sandmen down to infect everyone.

3a. He made the video seem like an alibi rather than his real plan for spreading the Sandmen.

3b. Morpheus causes brain chemistry changes through electronic signals. This in turn causes people to turn into Sandmen. Rasmussen figured out how to cause the same changes in awake people via video signals (those "glitches" you see throughout the episode).

Basically, Rasmussen was fucking with everyone to make sure they stayed on the ship long enough to make a long enough video with a compelling enough story that it would keep people watching to the end.

The only things the Doctor couldn't make sense of were the "spores" (the made-up story by Rasmussen) and he never figured out that Rasmussen was a Sandman himself.
>>
Jenna's head looks way too big for her body.
>>
>>62782196
I thought that initially, but I don't think it's necessarily true.

If the footage exists in the Doctor Who universe, then it's intended to make Sandmen out of anyone within the Doctor Who universe that watches it.

The fact that we are able to watch the footage doesn't mean that the footage was aimed at us (IRL people, as opposed to Doctor Who universe people).

We might just be watching a chunk of footage that exists within the Doctor Who universe.

Okay – so the Doctor and Clara just buggered off at the end, leaving Rasmussen to execute his plan? The Doctor never followed up on his suspicion that everything was a little too story-like? They left Nagata for dead on Le Verrier (she never enters the TARDIS)? Is Clara going to turn into a Sandman?

Also, I was a bit confused by the "sleep in your eye = camera" mechanics. It makes sense with Clara, since she used a Mark II Morpheus machine. The others only used a Mark I, though.

YFW the next Doctor is female but it's just David Tennant in drag.
>>

All of those are things that either the writers didn't think about or they will address in the sequel episode whenever that is.

Rose was defined a lot by her family. A lot of her character comes through in scenes involving her family. I get the feeling that RTD had planned the same thing for Martha, but a lot of the family stuff was cut because Reggie Yates was reportedly a cunt on set.

>so the Doctor and Clara just buggered off at the end, leaving Rasmussen to execute his plan?

Pretty much, yeah.

He apparently didn't make the connection between the video the guy was making, the story like events and the signal that Morpheus uses to mutate stuff.

>The Doctor never followed up on his suspicion that everything was a little too story-like?

Gatiss does have a sequel in mind, so the Doctor might get around to it sometime next series

>They left Nagata for dead on Le Verrier (she never enters the TARDIS)?

I dunno, thought she did get into it.

>Is Clara going to turn into a Sandman?

Don't think so, the Doctor I think earlier said something about how he could fix what the Morpheus did or something to Clara. So even on the offchance her eye boogers have been mutated, the Doctor could presumably fix it before it's too late

You know it's true m8s, Moffat's writing is getting lazier and lazier, he knows the fans will just eat up anything with his name on it.

I mean there's tones of problems with the show at the moment but certainly one of the major ones is the characters. Try and describe Clara's character without saying "feisty". Also look at what you listed, and look at how everything there could be applied to Amy as well.

Moffat is a god awful writer and he's ruining my favorite show and it's depressing. WHITHOUSE for showrunner

This feels like a massive problem, but I guess the sequel you mentioned might deal with how the Doctor stops the entire Doctor Who universe from turning into sleep dust. If not, I think it's a pretty dumb thing to leave hanging.

>the Doctor I think earlier said something about how he could fix what the Morpheus did or something to Clara

There was a throwaway comment along those lines, yeah. It bothers me that we'll never see it fixed on-screen, but I guess it doesn't matter too much, since she's probably dead next episode anyway.

All in all, a pretty confusing episode. It had a good atmosphere, and I still enjoyed it because I'm a sucker for the found footage style – particularly in horror. I just wish the underlying logic was more robust.

>>
>>62782825
Jack, Donna, Mickey, Martha.
>>62782813
I think Mickey was a fantastic character and not only because he was so likable, funny and charming, but he was a vital reminder of fantastical nature of the doctor. Mickey is basically just your average joe down the street and seeing how he responds to the TARDIS and the doctor is a natural human reaction, he feels like a genuine real person. Something Moffat characters almost always miss out on. Also his progression was really impressive and touching, particularly in the cyberman double.
Ten is brilliantly complex character and his constant struggles with saving everyone he possibly can is absolutely devastating and eventually turns into a deep depression at the universe which is developed in one of the show's best episodes The Waters of Mars.

Amy was never motherly. Maybe after she left the show and raised those kids with Rory, but not on the show. Clara has been motherly since she was introduced. The kids she nannied in series 7, the way she helped the little girl in Rings of Akhaten, her interactions with the young Doctor and young Danny.

Not the anon who originally wrote this and you've probably already had the same thoughts on 10, but it might give some insight

>I was on the fence about him for a long time, but having recently rewatched his era I can now safely say that I like him. He probably won't get into my top 5 any time soon, but I like him. I found him pretty boring for most of Series 2, but he grew on me season by season.
>I really liked his character arc. He tries to do good and uphold the whole "men who never would" thing (exaggerately so at times, like when he almost gets himself killed to give the Sontarans a chance to surrender that they will never take), but at the same time he's incredibly prone to fits of blind fury after he's been emotionally hurt (The Runaway Bride coming straight after Doomsday, The Family of Blood with the whole John Smith thing), and in those moments the "vengeful God" part of him that he's trying to suppress emerges. When these two parts of him fight, he's almost schizophrenic (the biggest example being the fact that in Journey's End there are literally two Tenth Doctors, one who wants nothing better than to wipe all those billions of Daleks from the face of creation, and the other who even tries to save Davros in spite of the fact that he obviously won't let himself be saved), and in The Waters of Mars he actually gives into his other side and tries to become a God of Time until Adelaide's death and his vision of Ood Sigma remind him that Time always gets its own way, and will catch up with him in the end. Finally, he gets his redemption in The End of Time by defeating the thing that he almost became (in the form of the Time Lords trying to become Gods themselves), and by defeating the part of himself who wants to be SO MUCH MORE when he decides to save Wilf by sacrificing his own life.
>At least, that's what I gathered after some reflection. I might be wrong.
>>
Joking aside, I hope the music used in the tv trailer for Face the Raven is the actual music used for Clara's departure.

Not in my opinion, that was just Amy's belief in the Doctor, not her whole outlook on life. Think about the Amy that we meet in Eleventh Hour before she meets the Doctor again, she's got a a more cynical attitude. Even with Rory and their marriage drama, or again the other few times we see her with the Doctor out of the picture, like the older Amy in TGWW, she's cynical.

Clara doesn't just think the Doctor can fix things, she thinks she can fix everything and tries too or believes that things are better than they are/should match up to her ideals.

Cold War/Robot of Sherwood (best), and Victory of the Daleks (worst).

>The part I don’t get is, if the Morpheus devices are all over the place already, then hasn’t Rasmussen already won? Anybody who’s used the pods has already been subjected to the same process that he’s trying to get people to subject themselves to by watching this video. Right? And in fact, by engineering this whole dramatic sequence of events, Rasmussen has now ensured that people on Triton are alerted to the danger of the pods and will try and destroy them. I’m not sure what the upside is here.

So what about the whole whole thing in The Rings of Akhaten about her mother? Could you explain to me were that was developed?

Anyway lets think through this character progression you're talking about, in series 7 she doesn't really get a character apart form being a plot device with the whole "impossible girl" shit. I mean that and the mother thing which was completely glossed over is all she has. Then series 8 she has easterners esque issues with her relationship and how she just can't keep with the time constraints or whatever the fuck which I don't think a single person gave a flying fuck about. And now in season 9 she's just basically understandable she just strolls around confronting everyone without a scratch. And it's not convincing at all it just completely takes away from the sense of thread. She never seems scared or threatened.

>So what about the whole whole thing in The Rings of Akhaten about her mother? Could you explain to me were that was developed?

That started in Bells of Saint John m8. That whole thing with her traveling book and the leaf as page one. It was her mother's.
They made it a point that the book was blank because she wanted to travel, but didn't to look after the kids of that family who were friends of her parents. She felt sympathy for them because their mother died as well.

The development is small, and it could be expanded on, but it's there.
