Carnivale got a little silly toward the end because the writers knew they had a limited time to work with so they accelerated the storyline too much. Still a fantastic, must-watch show though

this gets my vote, I slightly prefer it to The Thick of It

Capaldi's also directing a few episodes in the upcoming season.
Only concern is the fact that Iannucci stepped down from the show. Kind of hard to imagine what it'll be like if he's not working with the guy who helmed TToI.

One of the best shows ever made. 10/10 comedy, but I personally like it for the understated drama. Obviously there's drama in that half the time people are getting fucked over by the political system and swearing their lungs off at each other, but I mean more like when malcolm is in front of the press in the last episode, everything has gone to shit and they're swamping him with questions and he, even in the state he was in, still manages to completely silence them with just a few words. Really fucking powerful.

The Thick of it is probably the greatest comedy of all time. The verbal sparring is medal worthy. Plus, the physical comedy - like Malcolm Tucker trying to take off his seat belt when he's in a rage.

It's a shame that guy from the first 2 series got busted with CP, because he was a great actor - played the depressed dope incredibly well. Veep is filling the void, but it is no Toi. At least we got something though, Capaldi is too good for Dr. Who.

Like laughing tracks music is also used to dictate what the viewer should be feeling. I think the only way to get a good judgement of someone's acting is with just their acting and the actress who played Nicola killed it in the final few episodes as everything crumbled around her.

David Milliband won the first 3 rounds of voting and then won the most votes in the final round in the MEP section and Labour party members section. However Ed got a large portion of affiliated Labour members and so beat Dave by like 0.5 of a percent or something, despite Everyone wanting David who had pretty much won every round for ever section.

Everyone also agrees that David was the better candidate too and had a goodish chance of securing a labour win in 2015 but no instead we had Ed 'just fuck my party up' Miliband.. Like what happened in the thick of it basically.

David Miliband was a bit more right-wing than Ed, and ultimately the unions and affiliate members wanted a clean break from New Labour. Regrettably the Labour party has been stuck in new labour mode for so long they didn't know how to do this, so even Ed got pushed through the sausage machine.

Ed was a decent guy. It's a shame Ed didn't take the shadow energy sec job, I think he would've been good. The party made mistakes like not tackling that 'national credit card/mess we inherited' meme from day one, but the media has been incredibly hostile from day 1 (same shit that's happening to Jeremy Corbyn).

Yeah.
Columbus is a decent episode, pretty comfy and funny, I feel that most of the hate comes simply because of how good the rest is. Johnny Cakes too.

I am not saying this show does not have problems, but in terms of good x bad episode, I honestly don't feel there is a bad one.

Jonathon Frakes from Star-Trek the Next Generation makes a living directing TV shows these days. He's not bad at it either.
Star Trek was really good at developing talent over the years and giving the cast/crew work like that to expand their skills.

I loved that scene. He played it so sincerely and then the "fuck it" at the end was so much the funnier for it.

Mark Heap is hardly super successful. Simon and Nick are only successful because of their great double act.

It is a shame about Jessica Hynes though, she's had potential and never reached it. The perils of being an actress who is neither attractive nor ugly.

It was more of a shame that she never got as much credit for the show as Pegg and Wright did. Every interview about the show both guys stress that she was vital to the show and co-wrote every episode with Pegg and was key to a lot of the jokes and themes. But still she's ignored and it's a shame because she was a lot of fun in the show and has been good in practically everything I've ever seen her in.

I honestly think her biggest mistake was changing her professional name after she got married, stupid to say it but people don't know who she is when they check the credits.

yeah, by and large it's on the side of the establishment and right-wing, except the BBC which just echoes what all the rest of the media says anyway.

Only saving grace is it feels like they shot their load too early on Corbyn, and people are starting to become a bit numb to the shit they're trying to throw at him.

The only people from that who achieved lasting fame from Spaced was Pegg and Frost.

Absolutely this.

Even The Sopranos and The Wire each had one or two episodes that were a bit "meh", but there is not one single Curb episode which isn't, at the very least, pretty damn funny.

Even season 8 which was the least strong one was still better than most television.

I really need to watch TToI again...

Veep is good, but my biggest problem is that it exists to tell jokes, whereas TToI is more like a drama with funny moments.

Veep is "witty people showing how witty they are" and feels unnatural at times. Not that it's bad or anything, far from it, but I think it shows a clear distinction between American and British comedy.

I'd say my top three comedy shows are:

The Thick of It
Brass Eye/The Day Today (You can't really separate them)
Always Sunny in Philadelphia

Fleming was amazing, bringing a new character in for a purely dramatic ending (last 2 eps) is a bad writing schtick but he's so amazingly fleshed out it completely works.

Fawlty Tower's and Darkplace have the highest % imo, though it helps only having 6-12 episodes total.
