Help me /tv/, I'm a pleb.

There was a time when I would include inception and fight club in my favorite movies. Now that I've seen some actual cinema, I've fixed those errors. But here are my favorites:

>Interstellar
I won't claim that it's a great movie but it's visuals and emotions make it a personal favorite

>American Psycho
Funny, dark, and well acted, it makes me laugh and think.

>Pulp Fiction
Yes, I'm a Tarantino fan. This movie is wildly entertaining and written impressively.

>There Will Be Blood
My favorite movie. So original, so beautiful, so technically sound. Blew me away.

I know these movies aren't bad, but what do I need to watch to become more patrician? I'm not asking what I need to like; maybe I'm just a pleb at heart. I do want to give "art" a chance though.

Probably the most artsy thing I've seen is Enter the Void, which I did enjoy. Can I get some direction on which movies will expose me to that side of cinema? I've heard names like Tarkovsky, Lynch, and Cronenberg but haven't seen their stuff. Is that a place to start? What next?

Ya, I know it's not the best taste, but it is MY taste, as of now. I'm hoping to watch some movies that make realize these other movies are shit.

Sure start with those 3, they're all interesting. Watch 3 of each of their movies and come back to us with opinions, and we can recommend more.

I just liked how it shows off visually, but there was still a story present. Like I said, I haven't seen much like it, so maybe in comparison it's shit, but it was certainly an experience

>There was a time when I would include inception and fight club in my favorite movies.

You sound pretentious and hard to talk to.

Like what you like. All movies are subjective. /tv/ is just a bunch of jaded assholes (including myself) who are bitter that their fanscript for Star Wars 7 narrowly lost out to the hack JJ Abrams who is guilty of the crime of being a popular director.

Why are you being such a kek about it?
>>
Good that movie is such a fucking snooze. Can't believe I didn't walk out of the theater. There will be blood shouldn't even be considered for anyone's top 500 list. It's not artsy or good! Its just crap! Boring 2.5 hrs of filler and 5 minutes of actual plot. For a fucking 3 hour movie
>>
>>62760798
Lol fair enough I worded it cynically like many do here. No one says I'll magically like obscure stuff over block busters, I just want to know where to start to give it a chance

That was actually a failed dubs attempt.
What you should do is get the book 1001 movies to see before you die and start going through it hard core. After a while you won't be worried about what counts as "pleb" or "patrician" anymore. You'll be confident enough in your taste that you will feel free to have your own opinions.

Why do you care what random strangers will think of you so much? It's extremely obvious by how you wrote this, making sure to say for instance that Interstellar isn't a great movie but it's your personal favorite, cmon, how dumb do you think we are?

What is being a patrician, which is subjective anyway, going to achieve for you in your life? You can walk around pretending you like lots of the "patrician" movies much more than you actually did just because of their reputation.

Enjoying movies isn't an error.
>>
>>62760589
Only reddit dislikes interstellar
>>
>>62760202

Just start watching older highly acclaimed movies and foreign movies. Start with the basics like Godfather, Seven Samurai, 2001, 7th Seal, The Exterminating Angel, etc.. until you start to get a feel of what you like then you can move on from there.
>>
>>62760202
For starters stop trying to appease /tv/ or whatever pre-concieved notion you've created of what movies are acceptable to enjoy

Just start with universally acclaimed movies and follow what you like personally best from there
>>
>>62760202

Rating "There Will Be Boredom" as your favorite movie means you are neither a pleb or a patrician. It means you insane. You need to 5150 yourself and get some mental health care help fast.

are you saying that you've seen said movies or you are just aware they exist?
>>
>>62764071
Haven't seen, but I at least know which ones I need to watch (in regards to classics). Now I just need to know what is the standard repertoire of more out there or artsy stuff. Ultimately I just want exposure to them, not necessarily to like all of them. This way at least I can say I tried, or at most change the way I view movies

Rules Of The Game

La Dolce Vita

and you've already seen ETV so that's my 10.

Imho movies to expand your palate would be:
Ghost Dog Way of the Samurai
The Human Condition trilogy
Thank You For Smoking
Shadow of the Vampire
Pan's Labyrinth
The Wackness
Stray Dog
Wristcutters: A Love Story
Dr. Strangelove

These aren't necessarily top ten patrician films but it's probably a decent enough variety to let you figure out what you like and what you don't a bit.

I thought it was awesome until what happened in the toilet. The movie was really atmospheric and as a young adult that enjoyed psychedelics at the time it was pretty awesome.

>>
>>62764408
Yeah, though you do kind of have to be in the "right mindset" when you watch it because the pacing is a pretty off. But if you see it while on psychedelics it is literally 3x better!

Oh wait, if you see _any_ movie while on psychedelics, it will seem way better than it really is. Nevermind, I guess Enter The Void is pretty shit after all.
Don't waste a trip watching a shitty druggie movie like that just because it tries so hard to "feel like DMT" (if you were actually on DMT while watching it, you would be way too fried to be able to follow what's going on anyway). Watch something a little more wholesome, like Koyaanisqatsi, Baraka or Samsara instead.

Enter the Void is to tripping as Pineapple Express is to smoking weed. Except Pineapple Express doesn't try to "simulate" being stoned.

better example for weed would be Inherent Vice

Being John Malkovich is kind of creepy in general, and psychedelics just amplify all your feelings. They also kind of make you feel like a child (mentally), so everything is just that much more impressive, as if you were a kid seeing it for the first time.
I used to have a massive stash of what was basically shrooms in powder form.. I had so much that I ended up doing it way too often. I have seen a lot of movies while on it; it was one of my favorite things to do. Trainspotting was the most potent movie I'd ever seen in my life (on first viewing) because I was on it, and What Dreams May Come was fucking gut-wrenching and so good. Prometheus and Interstellar were fucking 10/10's in theaters because I saw them on it, and Shutter Island and Limitless were 10/10's as well, just playing off Netflix. Limitless, for fucks sake! Also, Groundhog Day is an amazingly spiritual movie if you take it seriously.
>>
>>62760202
are you 12 years old? I refuse to believe anyone over 20 would have Interstellar even close to their top 10

Since you already know if lynch and cronenberg, go ahead and check them out. Cronenberg is the MASTER of body horror, and lynch makes strange emotionally moody mystery films with amazing ambience.

Also since you love twwb so much do yourself a big favour and watch the rest of pta filmography. Magnolia and boogie nights are amazing, you may even wind up liking them more than twwb. Let me know if you'd like more suggestions id be happy to get into further detail.
