This is the perfect Star Trek film in my opinion.

Agree? Disagree?

Do you like the director's edition?
Let's talk The Motion Picture.
>>
Eh, probably my least favorite of the original series. But then Final Frontier was my favorite, so my opinion is obviously worthless.

Still. 5 > 2 > 3 > 6 > 4 > 1

Completely agree. It encapsulated the spirit of the show better than any of the other Star Trek movies. My second favorite behind Search for Spock. Director's edition is GOAT.

It is the best Star Trek film next to "The Wrath of Khan", a great Science-Fiction film in general (and a BETTER Sci-Fi film than TWOK), but it's not without imperfections.

Unfortunately it is quite apparent that the ending was scripted "on the go". If the ending had been as sophisticated as the rest of the movie it would indeed have been close(r) to perfect.

Those were javelins thrown by giant caveman guys.

They probably had rubber points though...

A massive disappointment at release.
The fans had been so hungry for new trek (a ten year wait, roughly), and what they got was a mish mash of a TOS episode (The Changeling) and a TAS episode (One Of Our Starships Is Missing).

The WTF over the "new" Klingons was pretty pronounced as well...
>>
>>
>>62748561
Too bad CBS/Paramount didn't regard it feasible to just recomposite and clean up the old effects shots (given that was even POSSIBLE, of course) as they did on TNG, instead of replacing them with CGI.
While of course the old effects shots look shitty from today's perspective and the use of stock footage is really conspicuous, the CGI work in some TOS-R episodes was just so fucking sloppy!

"Balance of Terror"? – One of my all-time favorites!

What did you like about Into and 09?

I tried very hard to view them with an open mind but found very little to take away.

Into grappled a little bit with the Starfleet-as-military-or-peacekeepers problem. But the execution was way off. It doesn't look like they'll revisit that point, in the manner of an overarching plot. Might've been interesting if they'd set it up as a trilogy, with Starfleet becoming increasingly militarized.

I like the fact that the song playing in this scene was quite haphazardly written and recorded by one of the movie's associate producers along with some other staff members (namely of the sound department) and some buddies. They recorded it in some studio hallway.
The guy's name was Kirrk Thatcher and as a matter of fact he himself played the punk in that scene.

I would point out that mildly controversial posts get deleted on reddit, but the same happens on 4chan's enthusiast blue boards, even if you didn't technically break a site rule but just have an opinion contrary to the board norms. Some of them have overzealous mods and janitors. You disagree with someone and suddenly get banned from all boards for 5 days. In the good ol' days, you had to post serious CP to earn a 5-day ban.
>>
>>62744926
It's a great movie, made even better by Jerry Goldsmith's career best score. The Director's Cut is really well done, it trimmed down some of the overdone effects shots and added some clarifying shots that really added to the film. I wish it would come out on BRD.
>>
I love The Motion Picture, but you can really tell it was a two-parter they just turned into a film. It's been a while since I saw it but I can't remember there being much in the way of urgency towards the end of it. I know V'Ger was heading for Earth, and the implication was it would blow it up or something, but it seemed like the story forgets about that towards the end of it and as a result it just feels like the film is some sort of weird first contact story. It's very Star Trek in feel, so I can't fault it for that, but I do see why it's unpopular.

Still has some great scenes in it, like the Enterprise flypast, and Spocks journey through V'Ger. Soundtrack was great as well, as already mentioned.

>A massive disappointment at release.

No it wasn't. It was successful at the box office.

Its hilarious when 20-something year olds talk about stuff before they were born like they were alive and knew what was actually going on. Shows what true idiots they are.
>>
>>62744926
None of the movies captured the magic of the tv show. TOS was dynamic and full of energy, with just about the perfect amount of hamminess. The movies all felt tired and old. And yes, I know the actors were older, but not all movies with old people in them make we want to go take a nap.
>>
>>62744926
I enjoy it and think it's great Star Trek but I think it's far from being the best.

I always liked the fact that most of the films were a little more action oriented than the shows, I thought it was a nice compliment.

From what they've been saying about it, I'm hopeful that Star Trek Beyond won't be about an evil guy wanting revenge or being Kirk's nemesis.

It sounds like they're going to focus more on the exploration side of Star Trek.
>>
>>62749367
The only thing I can really say about JJ Trek is that it's not boring. It's dumbed down, punch 'em in the face, lowest common denominator schlock riddled with plot holes and full of unlikable, one-dimensional characters, that completely pisses in the face of Star Trek... but it's not boring. Man, when Abrams was interviewed, he said he never "got" Star Trek and tried to make a movie that would appeal to people like him. Fuck that guy.

I think everyone sclamoring for more exploration is just proof we need that new series, we need it soon, and we need it done right.

I don't mind having these archvillain type stories but they fucked up the last one so bad I get pains in my groin.
Nero I liked, cool ship, best looking Romulans we've had in years; but Khan? They took an 11/10 villain and made him a 4, if that.

I get they sort of hinted that left unchecked he would be a force to be reckoned with but you never get a real sense if menace from him. In fact, they make him someone you can actually sympathize with. A guy who just wants his crew brought to him while Admiral Marcus was fucking great. There's a guy you can hate.

>>
>>62744926
I disagree totally, it was good but it was a story that could have been told in an episode.

Undiscovered Country was the perfect Star Trek movie. Sure, it was a little more explosions than should be Star Trek, but all of it had purpose. It had the staples of Star Trek, political, economic and alien themes. It had personal themes that were fantastic like Spock enlisting them without their permission cause it was logical. And the Shakespearian dialoge is another staple to Star Trek, so it represented it perfectly.

I don't think anyone could say there was a more Star Trek movie than that, maybe another favorite, but not a more Star Trek movie.
