With the movie coming out in 2017, who else here is a Tower Junkie?
I've been reading the series since I first found them when I was 13, 14 years ago. I've re-read the series every year since.
Main questions, what do you hope to see? Do you think they will do a good job sticking to the source material? How will they do with the Oracle in the mountains when Roland fucks her good?
Also what about later books? How will the liberals handle Odetta with her white honkey ma fahs, and will they have to make an Insomnia, or Salem's Lot, movie to help tie into the series?
Also, what about the cast? That's one of my biggest worries out there.
There is no way in hell they'll show Roland murdering all those kids in Tull.

I read the 2nd, 4th, and 5th ones when I was in jail. They didn't have the whole series and some of the other guys were hogging the books.
I never finished the series but it was pretty good. Cool concepts and characters but the writing was pretty cliche at times. I'm skeptical of them making it into a whole series. They might have to skip over some parts or else it will be a huge 7 part movie series like Harry Potter. That's a huge investment and risk for a movie studio to make for a series most people have never heard of.
My favorite part was the weird lowmen guys. So many subplots and flashbacks.

The Wastelands: Fun, but feels like filler. Cliffhanger super annoying.

I can't find the second one anywhere, and I can't buy it online for some unexplainable reason that's probably related to mental illness, so I've read the first and the third and fourth are sitting in my big 2read pile. Are they sequential? Can I just skip to the third?

Nah it was a welcome escape from the boredom. I was more upset that they didn't have the whole series. Susannah really annoyed me, too. It seemed like she just slowed everyone down without bringing any entertainment to the story. I sorta suspected she was being crazy on purpose and they were being too easy on her. She had no personality and magically became useful in combat in Wolves of Callah.
I just remembered in Wolves there were those kids that grew really big and dumb and died young? Damn those books were so fucking weird

I think his sidekicks as a whole were the biggest problem in the books.
Susannah was boring.
Eddie was cringe and lolsorandum.
The kid was shit and oh they had a talking racoon comic-relief.
The racoon was especially gay, but I hated Eddie the most. With his weird timeline where his slightly older brother supposedly fought in Vietnam but it's like the late 80s.
Read the first book, it's the best in the series but the energy just drops as soon as he meets the kid for the first time.

Are you shitting me? Eddie was corny at times but he was the only good sidekick. If it was just Roland it would be too serious. Eddie could basically rephrase things that Roland said in an 80s street guy type of way that made me giggle. He kept the story somewhat grounded in reality and was more relatable than Roland. I was scratching my head over the Vietnam thing, tho. Couldn't figure out if he was supposed to be from the 70s or 80s. His pop culture references were all over the place

I think the anachronisms with Eddie and his brother comes from the fact that he started it years before he went ahead and finished the book. This is also the point in time when his boozing and coke use was at their highest.

4th book is my least favorite, but after reading it a few times, it really grows on you and it's cool to see Cuthbert and Alain.

In the final book Roland comes across a kid who literally shows up at the very end of Insomnia, but the rest of the books involves breakers, lowmen, and fighting against the crimson kings army.

I think the idea to have Russel Crowe play him is probably a good idea.
In terms of appearance he's not the best looking but Roland is often described as not-handsome, it's his character that makes people gravitate toward him not his looks.
But the main reason I advocate Russel Crowe is because from the certain words Roland uses like "gunna" and all those made up words, I get the impression that Gilead was a kind of muddled European type accent/dialect and I think that the Australian accent is probably the best kind of bastardized accent that would fit.
For some reason I just never imagined him having an american accent even though he was imagined from the typical gunslinger.

If they fuck this up, I will never forgive Hollywood for ruining one of my favorite book series. They better not "PC" this shit up, basically. When Roland fucks the Oracle while tripping on mescaline, they better have a physically uncomfortable to watch 10 minute long scene of him getting raped by the celestial slut. That means Odetta better be portrayed as the hornery cracka killing nigger she was meant to be. That means when Roland drops the kid in the pit, they better fucking show that he willingly did it instead of playing it off as "oh u were 2 slow to save him lol".
Also, if they don't use this song during the opening scene of Roland travelling across the desert, then that's a good sign the film may turn out to be shit.

Not OP but yeah, it's a really great addition, you get a bit more of Roland's backstory plus an old tale from the days before Gilead. Highly recomended, best read after W&G and before Wolves.
I've only read book 1 and enjoyed it. Should I bother with the rest? it seems like it gets inconsistent with quality. Some good some bad. 6 + more books seems daunting too.

That just has to do with King's overall change in writing style over the years. Gunslinger was one of the first things he ever wrote and then ignored for a decade, wrote the next 3 and then ignore for another decade or so. Rothfuss has nothing on his release schedule.

Then I started reading the second, where Roland is fighting some giant lobster creature and it all seemed to fall apart. The more I knew the less I was interested.

I honestly hated that story and cannot understand why it is so popular. I read all the books except for the last one, which I simply couldn't finish anymore. I was always hoping some time the story will be starting, but it's just a huge snore fest from beginning to end.
I think this will be horrible as a movie, because literally nothing ever happens and all the characters are stupid, ugly (handicapped) and unlikable (except for walter, he is kinda cool).
