Just saw this. Nothing too special. It's gorgeously shot.

Just saw this. Nothing too special. It's gorgeously shot. A lot of fantastic moments of staging, lyricism, framing. Drags on a bit. Score is heavy-handed and grating. Redmayne is fantastic, probably gonna get a second nomination. Best part of this film is that it triggered tumblr, though.

6/10.

Anyone else see this?

They didn't want a "cis" (= sane) actor to play a trans degenerate.

Because the fact that the character is played by a guy instead of a real MtF that means it enforces the idea that trans people are just guts playing dress up or some shit

How many trans actors are available that would fit the role?

You'd think they'd love it, because it's a (admittedly moving) portrayal of the beginning of the trans movement, but they're mad because Eddie Redmayne is a cismale playing a transwoman.

It of course ignores the logic that Eddie Redmayne's character is a man (or a man in a dress) for 3/4ths of the movie, only actually beginning a true-to-form transition in the mid-third act.

Some people just live to be indignant and want change less than they want an excuse to be righteously angry at something. Hollywood does have something of a problem casting cisgender actors in transgender roles, but personally I think it's worse when they cast a cisgender woman as a transwoman than when they cast a cisgender male (who is, after all, the raw material of a transwoman, so to speak) - particularly because in those cases they usually use them as a chance to fetishistically gawk at how hot someone's old friend has become or some such. In stories about transition, I think it's perfectly acceptable to cast a cisgender actor as a trans character (such as Redmayne as Lili Elbe). In stories where the transition is a done deal, though, I think looking for a trans actor or actress should be a priority (see Jamie Clayton as Nomi Marks or Laverne Cox as Sophia Burset). On the other hand, the announcement of that movie Tomboy with Michelle Rodriguez doesn't sit right with me.
