I'm not sure if I mind that, at all. I watched the 1970's version with Chamberlain as well, and I've read the book, but the Caviezel one just feels so much more.. comfortable. Even more rewarding in the end.
I like the two movies in their own ways, considering the first one is incredibly true to the book, albeit too short to contain such a story. But the 2002 movie just hit home for me. I'm fine with the changes because they did it well. (even if rather cliché)
