I understand what a soft reboot is. this is the start of a sequel trilogy, but is clearly remaking the original movie in the series and using the combined visuals of the first three movies because of nostalgia and familiarity. it's a product designed to appeal to people who grew up with the originals that will bring their children to it who will then become fans.
An actual sequel to RotJ wouldn't have rebels fighting an empire. the fairytale story ended and a new situation would be needed. this movie is ignoring that to use what people recognize.
