I went from loving Family Guy when I got the DVDs back in 2002 (I was ten) to hating it when I got to be 14, to liking it all over again now that I'm 23. I think that's about right. Family Guy was more like the Simpsons in its first three seasons, then when it came back it was still focusing on character development, and now the staff acknowledges that if they want the show to be gag-heavy to just have the characters be basic, two-dimension vehicles for the gags to make them work.
If the show would just cut back on the gore and sexually explicit jokes and put in more gags like these links here, I think people would actually enjoy it a lot.

Family Guy throws out so many gags every episode that they always have at least one that makes me chuckle, and if a gag isn't funny then its over in 15 seconds. I don't really get the vehement hate for it. Modern Simpsons is much worse, just completely flat and drawn out for 21 minutes
