I think almost all comedians are smarter than you think they are. Being consistently funny isn't an easy thing to do. Even the ones that put on a persona of being a bumbling idiot are actually pretty clever, and just using the act to help with their comedy style. A good example would be Alan Davies from the show QI. He always acts as the idiot, but outside of acting he's shown himself to be rather smart. IQ tests performed on standup comedians average them to be around 115 IQ or so, well above average.

I used to think that as well until I noticed that most comedians who go up against someone who is actually intelligent get destroyed. Usually happens on panellist type shows where they talk about current issues.
