Very early rumours, presumably based on the Michael Arndt script before Kasdan was brought on to help Abrams do the rewrite, suggested that the a hooded antagonistic figure obsessed with Vader may have actually been Luke, who had been presumed missing.
There's also this piece of concept art which clearly shows the hooded figure with a cybernetic hand. I guess the feeling was that Luke becoming a Sith wouldn't have flown well with audiences, so that element was removed and the remaining concepts were recycled into Kylo.

This, JJ's recent interview gave me hope that they won't do this.
He understands that vader being luke's father as a twist was a product of the circumstances unique to the time and place of making ESB. They finished the first movie with no intention of doing that, time went on, and after everyone digested the story, they realized it would extremely dramatic and no one would see it coming.
The new movies need to take advantage of their own opportunities, not copy the opportunities or choices of the former trilogy.

I personally enjoyed the rumour that suggested Luke had accidentally caused some catastrophic event using the Force inbetween ROTJ and TFA, and decided to seclude himself from the galaxy to prevent anything worse happening.
