She didn't really have any depth, she existed only to aggravate Tony. Basically seemed like a way for David Chase to vent his own mommy issues in a very one-sided and one-note manner.
I know they had a lot planned for the character, and if the actress hadn't passed away, maybe the character would've been rounded out over the course of the series. As it is, she stands out as a one-dimensional stereotype in a show otherwise filled with three-dimensional, human characters

No i actually think it was a great character with a deep background and the perfomance was superb, not to mention that it created interesting dynamics in all chapters of the 1st and 2nd season
BUT, i will pretend i didn't like it at all and point to some irrelevant facts just for the sake of it:
1. Character overemphasizes stereotypes about old people
2. It doesn't actually represent an italian mother, while her son is like 110% italian
3. She always have the same expression
4. It dies in a pretty natural way when everyone was expecting something more spectacular
5. It's evil for no reason
