the whole idea of choosing only one film per decade is a little ridiculous

that being said, i'm going to try it:

10s: A Burning Hot Summer/Mysteries of Lisbon
00s: Miami Vice/Eloge de l'amour
90s: Histoire(s) du cinema/New Rose Hotel
80s: The Moderns/A nos amours\
70s: From the Clouds to the Resistance/La cicatrice interieure/Out 1/Duelle
60s: Scattered Clouds/Playtime/Gertrud
50s: The Tiger of Eschnapur/The Lusty Men/Bitter Victory/Journey to Italy/French Cancan/Vertigo/Bonjour tristesse/too many to list (this is true for everything on this list)

fuck it, this is too hard

One a decade is just absurd. Film peaked, and covered the biggest ground in the 60's, whereas the 90's and 00's hardly feel like they've anything worth mentioning in the same breath as the masterpieces of the 60's and 70's.

Just not a good system.

imo, viaggio is best roberto, but india, the taking of power by louis xiv, age of the medici, and il messia come close. i still need to finish up some bits of his filmography, so who knows how many more masterpieces he has.

ozu has only ever really clicked with me three times: autumn afternoon, tokyo twilight and late spring. but i'll concede that he's a master regardless.

kind of wanted to put showgirls in as well, because it is for sure the best, but w/e. there's always another list at another time.

This is the last film I ever walked out on. So tedious. So empty. It ended my being a Tarantino fan.
I think I just barely missed the big ending everyone talked about and I don't mind at all.
>>
>>55829855
also, rivette love it

"Starship Troopers (Paul Verhoeven, 1997): I’ve seen it twice and I like it a lot, but I prefer Showgirls (1995), one of the great American films of the last few years. It’s Verhoeven’s best American film and his most personal. In Starship Troopers, he uses various effects to help everything go down smoothly, but he’s totally exposed in Showgirls. It’s the American film that’s closest to his Dutch work. It has great sincerity, and the script is very honest, guileless. It’s so obvious that it was written by Verhoeven himself rather than Mr. Eszterhas, who is nothing. And that actress is amazing! Like every Verhoeven film, it’s very unpleasant: it’s about surviving in a world populated by assholes, and that’s his philosophy. Of all the recent American films that were set in Las Vegas, Showgirls was the only one that was real – take my word for it.I who have never set foot in the place!" --Jacques Rivette

It's No Country fo Old Men or Gladiator. You could make a case for "Oh Brother Where Art Thou?", too.
