Song of the Sea
It used to be Secret of Kells, and then Song of the Sea came out. Beats the shit out of any Ghibli movie, and Ghibli is still masterworks.
The only problem with Song of the Sea is that the mom character makes no sense from a story perspective. She had a family with that poor man, knowing full well she would have to leave at some point. Unintentionally made her seem like a total cunt.

>“A movie is made for an audience and a film is made for both the audience and the filmmakers. I think that The Game is a movie and I think Fight Club‘s a film. I think that Fight Club is more than the sum of its parts, whereas Panic Room is the sum of its parts. I didn’t look at Panic Room and think: Wow, this is gonna set the world on fire. These are footnote movies, guilty pleasure movies. Thrillers. Woman-trapped-in-a-house movies. They’re not particularly important.” - David Fincher
>"My film is not a movie. My film is not about Vietnam. It is Vietnam. It's what it was really like. It was crazy. We were in the jungle, there were too many of us, we had access to too much money, too much equipment, and little by little we went insane." — Francis Ford Coppola
>http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Film#Terminology_used
>By contrast, in the US "movie" is the predominant form. Although the words "film" and "movie" are sometimes used interchangeably, "film" is more often used when considering artistic, theoretical, or technical aspects, as studies in a university class and "movies" more often refers to entertainment or commercial aspects, as where to go for fun on a date. For example, a book titled "How to Read a Film" would be about the aesthetics or theory of film, while "Lets Go to the Movies" would be about the history of entertaining movies.

Howl's moving castle. Although I think it's the best Ghibli film up to date, I had many unanswered questions.
1. The scene when Howl meets Calcifer.
How the fuck does he know what to do with the shinny thing? Why is he swallowing it?
2. Howl suddenly goes insane. Literally what the fuck.
3. There's seemingly a war going on but against whom?
4. That scene right after Sophie and Howl escaped from Sullivan's place. 2 abstract 4 me
>>55368558
1. That is Howl's heart which he gives to Calcifer to stop him from dying
2. Howl transforms into a giant bird form to fight, but every transformation brings him closer to becoming a beast
3. Neighboring country's Crown Prince went missing and Sophie's country was suspected of foul play (Turnip Head is actually the Crown Prince under a curse until Sophie kisses him)
4. Can't recall that scene
>>55368790
Never mind the 4th question. It kinda overlaps with the second one. Here's the scene I'm talking about: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QqtBPXSDSWg

I like when people use the fact that something is animated creatively, so basically anything by Satoshi Hon is a favorite.
His shit is so creative that western film directors rip him off all the time, but no matter how hard they try they can't do what he does vis a vis the changing of scenes, cutting, and use of his medium.
Too bad he died.

>>55368558
I think it's a commonly held opinion that Howl is confusing.
>>55372301
Yeah they decided at the last minute that they didn't have a good enough sequel hook, so they crammed in a new ending that made no sense at all and had nothing to do with the rest of the movie.
>>55368061
Don't feel too bad, the studio admits they arent sure where the movies are going when they write them.
>>55378040
I think Miyazaki said that about himself, but I can't remember if he was talking about just The Wind Rises or his movies in general. Other writers/directors at Ghibli don't necessarily have the same approach.

Oshii is a very good director. All his action scenes are very well done (he likes to keep them few and far between tough) and he always finds a way of making his montages relate meaningfully to the themes of the movie. He also likes to show visually symbolic cues and tie them repeatedly throughout the movie.
His only sins are his love for excessive wordy monologues and slow pace editing.

Just letting you know that Kara no Kyoukai was one of the first really successful light novels in the late 90s, back in the day when light novels mostly centered around lovecraftian horror in downtown areas, light philosophy, space operas etc. Unlike today in which 90% of the shit pumped out as light novels consist of wishfulfillment, harem, ecchi and "epic" fantasy garbage.
I'm going to assume you think Kino's Journey is also bad because it's based a novel made for otaku? Or Legend of the Galactic Heroes? Fucking pleb.
