Now that the dust has settled, is this Quentin's best movie?
>>
I was at a sold-out showing on Christmas Day and a group of five people came into the theater three minutes before the show started.

Being that they couldn't all sit together, two sat on the side of me and three sat behind me. Every single one of them were SUPER sick. Behind me I had one dude sneezing, another one coughing (big hacking cough, spitting all over my neck), the girl next to me kept saying she had the chills and kept sniffling and her boyfriend fell asleep. She asked him if he could make it to the end and he said he's, "Just so sick."

As if that wasn't annoying enough, THEY KEPT TEXTING EACH OTHER THROUGHOUT THE FILM. So their smartphones were on the entire time as the people in the row behind me texted the people next to me.

It was a nightmare. Now, I'm guaranteed to get sick and they really wrecked the movie. The Hateful Eight? More like THE SICKLY FIVE.

In Hateful Eight, Tarantino never misses an opportunity to miss an opportunity to show what's going on with various characters in key moments. And on a script level, it makes no sense that the gang of killers wouldn't have tried to capitalize on this diversion. It also makes no sense that Jackson, suspecting Mexican Bob murdered Minnie and the others, would have taken that random opportunity to blow away an essentially harmless old man, however racist he may have been. AND on a script level it also makes no sense that Goggins, at this point in time, wouldn't have stripped Jackson of his gun and cuffed him, or at least tried to, after pulling that stunt.

>>
>>64278627
I've seen both versions. Besides the overture and intermission, here are some differences
- Early in the 70mm version, Warren and Ruth have a short exchange regarding an old horse Ruth owned. Warren asks Ruth if he mercifully put the horse down to which he replies that he did (which is pretty interesting because it is the exact opposite of how he treats Daisy). This exchange is missing the theatrical version.

- The 70mm version includes a short scene where Ruth asks Bob to finish plucking a chicken, seeing as how half-plucked chicken is bad luck. There's an additional shot of him plucking the chicken shortly after. The theatrical version is without the exchange and the shot - instead, it only shows the final portion, where Bob is finishing up and brushes the remaining feathers off of his lap.

- There's an extended dialogue sequence in the 70mm version featuring Smithers and Mannix where Mannix explains that Warren is the famous black Union Major with a price on his head. Smithers reacts as if he knows of Warren's reputation, clearly upsetting him. We later find out why. The theatrical version cuts out this short exchange but, while it does add some nuance to these characters and their backstory, doesn't add anything that the audience would not have deduced anyway.

- in the theatrical version, during Daisy's rendition of 'Botany Bay,' the camera starts on a crane and slowly zooms in towards her as she sings. The movie then cuts to a profile view with her in the foreground and two characters engaging in an important plot point in the background. Alternatively, the 70mm version starts and ends with the stationary profile shot during the whole song and includes a portion where she messes up that is not included in the theatrical cut.

>le newer films are disappointing and older ones are good meme

Everything in this movie seemed implausible (Why did Hangman let the spook on in first place? Why did he let the other guy if he didn't really think he was who he said he was?)

Why did the gang just let Hangman take over the cabin? Why did they pretend to be caring about the law yet no problem when the spook cut Cowboy's neck?

I never really cared about any of the characters that much. Why was killing the girl the big "payoff" at the end? She wasn't the worst character to me. If anything, Channing Tatum's character annoyed me the most.
>>
>>64279934
Also, After Ruth dies, Warrren made Mannix, Oswaldo, Gage and Bob stand againt the wall.
Why didn't Jody kill Warren then, this was the perfect time to do it. Because Mannix was unarmed and Oswaldo had a hidden gun in his pants. Jody could have easily killed Warren and Oswaldo could have killed an unarmed Mannix who was standing next to him..

This script seems like it was hurried and not thought out well.

I did not expect much (at least I hoped for more claustrophobic situations). It was fine for me.

I think that Tarantino is best in one thing: mass murder by a gang. I must admit I liked that idea in Kill Bill (wedding scene) and I liked it in H8.

I mean it is interesting when you know that normal and happy situation will end horribly.

I know realized how poor was Red Wedding in GoT and how much better it could have been if Tarantino made it.

The movie did a great job of showing how hypocrytical and bigoted the Major was in his racism towards everyone in the haberdashery and his projection.

The production of the western would most likely have begun in the summer of 2014, but after the script for the film leaked in January 2014, Tarantino considered dropping the film and publishing it as a novel instead.[7] He said he had given the script to a few trusted colleagues, including Bruce Dern, Tim Roth, and Michael Madsen.[8][9] This version of the script featured a different ending in which Warren and Mannix kill Gage by forcing him to drink the poisoned coffee, Domergue reaches Mannix's gun and shoots Warren dead, and the wounded Mannix is left to die alone

The thing is that normally his films don't have a human center beyond references to other films, but Mannix and Warren setting aside their differences and bonding put this over the top for me.
>>
>>64280524

The colonel was the 2nd most racist guy there next to the southern general.

Hell, SLJ's character was the only one droning on about race shit when the Hangman, Domergue & the gang barely even have 3 lines mentioning race.

>Goggins should have pulled his pistol for a stand-off
Warren hadn't drawn. if Goggins draws, Warren is dead because the old man can just pick up the gun and shoot him because Warren is no longer able to go for his own weapon.
>>
>>64280667
Certainly not. The black dingus scene and then Warren shooting the general wasn't another QT revenge fantasy regarding black empowerment. I definitely think the films attitude toward Warren's behavior was at the very least disapproving, certainly not glorifying his actions at all.

You got your first taste of Warren being an asshole when he embarrasses John Ruth about the letter. The film built on that part of his character when he snuck up on Joe Gage and held the knife to his neck, and Joe Gage literally calls him sneaky.

Lastly, you sympathize a little with the General when he lets Warren sit down with him and he starts talking about his son. This made me think Warren took advantage of and shot an old man, rather than avenged the black troopers the General once slaughtered in war.

I definitely think Warren is not a good dude, and that the film didn't intend for you to think he was
>>
>>64280524
>has to think cleverly in order to combat and defend himself from white supremacy and oppression that surrounded him in the country and even in the cabin which was a local black company overtaken by white thugs and was only taken out by a white person underneath him showing that no matter how much better you are then white people, more racist white people will always be there to kill you because you are black
Your thought process is literally so simple and plebeian. ooga booga black guy got shot so it was justice. Your whiteness and minimal life experience is incredibly transparent.

He's saying that what you're referring to as the "70mm cut" is actually the Roadshow cut. If you were unfortunate enough to go to one of the showings where the projector crapped out you would have seen the Roadshow cut in digital

it's a thematically relevant monologue - the idea that doing stuff dispassionately is an important part of being civilized, near the start of a film where pretty much everyone chimps out for the whole running time, even the movie itself with the OTT gore.

the fake Hangman is acting the part because he realizes Mannix expects it of him.

Mannix is the one listening because he's the character who has to wrestle with what the right thing to do is near the end of the film.
>>

The Hateful 8 was complete garbage. I've got all this guys movies, but Django and Hateful 8 were both total trash. No, it's not a "nigger" thing, alright? The story arcs, pacing, and character development have been completely sub par. Why did Q intentionally utilize Ultra-Pana and then leave his viewers inside one room for the entirety of the movie? Where are my rolling landscapes? Where's my Home On The Range? Is this a western? Or is this Kurt Russell in boots? I thought it was total crap. That's not to say there weren't salvageable bits. But if a 3 hour movie by a entirely capable director is reduced to salvageable bits before becoming palatable, that's a shit movie. I don't give points for effort. Shit was beat. Go see Star Wars, it was amazing. Q's an asshole, J.J.'s an artist.

There's this thing about Tarantino where everyone always assumes it's NOT going to be a dialogue-heavy movie.

From the very start of his career he always had a couple of badasses in a closed environment trying to out-talk each other. That's it. That's all it ever was.
He does pepper it with action and some set pieces but very rarely and mostly just copy pasted cool shit he saw somewhere, but primarily it is always about dialogue.

So even knowing he was going to use ultra panavision, it was clear he was mostly going to use it to film people in a room talking.
You only have yourself to blame if you thought it was going to be anything else than that.

Did anyone seriously enjoy this movie? It's such a fat piece of absolute hackery that I was seriously awestruck while watching it. It was complete shit on every conceivable level.

First off the movie looked like utter shit because instead of taking advantage of glorious hyped up 70mm Panavision he shot almost the entire movie indoors. So aside from a long fucking closeup of Jesus and some snow shots at the start, it's completely wasted and just made the production more expensive and showings more complicated. This will also fuck everyone who wants to watch the movie on Blu-Rays because they're going to get shit letterbox format instead of being able to see the movie properly. What was the point?

Second, the dialogue. The dialogue was some of the worst I've ever seen in a movie. It was Manos: The Hands of Fate tier shit you wouldn't tolerate in DTV nonsense but people are praising it. Characters constantly repeat each other. Characters don't have ANY natural conversations, they take turns delivering longwinded exposition, like in the carriage at the beginning when Mannix, Russell, and Jackson literally just take turns yelling each others' backstory. This is so clumsy, so awful, that only a complete autist who's never heard people talking in real life before would think it's good writing. Oh and can't forget Tarantino's tired old nigger jokes. They're not funny but hey, people are saying nigger. Nigger nigger nigger, that's still edgy, right?

Then there's the acting. Absolutely dreadful. Everyone is hamming it up or not even trying. Leigh, Tim Roth, and sheriff guy just put on annoying fucking accents and everyone else was sleepwalking or wasted. Samuel L. Jackson treats his role as just one giant joke. It's straight C-list tier.

The pacing of the movie was complete ass. The movie crawls for an hour with unfunny dialogue and drawn out bullshit conversations and it takes nearly two hours before anything resembling a coherent plot emerges. (continued)

>>64285130

The plot only advances due to an event that has basically nothing to do whatsoever with everything that happened before, meaning that the first hour and a half or so was completely pointless wankery. There is also Tarantino's incredibly cringeworthy narration, which adds absolutely nothing and could have been excised from the movie entirely since everything described is shown anyway. This narration only occurs twice in the movie and never again, so it is hard to see why it was put in there AT ALL unless it was so Tarantino could talk about black dicks in white mouths and have a giggle.

The movie switches from a Western to a closed room murder mystery far too quickly to handle that sort of genre shift, and the mystery is then solved very quickly using information that the audience could not have possibly known, that had nothing to do with anything shown onscreen. So it's a shitty mystery too. And it's then solved via extended flashback. The flashback itself is well executed, unlike the rest of the movie, and it raises the question of why people talk about this movie as though the mystery was a central point when it lasts like ten minutes and is shitty and the movie could have just started with the flashback and progressed from there.

All pretense of being a murder mystery is then abandoned as Tarantino blunders his way towards this shitty drawn out conclusion purposely lengthened through the use of slo-mo on speech and more shitty ham acting and terrible dialogue, culminating in a hanging. But by this point who the fuck even cares. It feels like the movie ended simply because if it didn't end then it would have went on forever, and Tarantino throws in a lot of CGI blood to give his fanboys some red meat and hope they ignore what an absolute bore the rest of the movie was.

tl;dr Tarantino is a hack and this movie was total shit and I'm tired of him shitting up film with his bizarre views on race relations or whatever the fuck he gets out of this shit.

Sorry, but everything I've heard about these flicks is that they suck; Inglourious Basterds being Jew revenge porn and Django Unchained being Black revenge porn. I have no interest in that.

Tarantino is obviously a quirky / edgy writer and director and while that means some of his movies are great, others are inevitably going to be shit.

Famous actors you think are overrated.

nice to hear that it worked as intended for an audience.
>>
It was pretty good.

I liked Kurt Russel's character the most, he had a lot of the best lines and the way he got butthurt at finding out the letter was a fake was really adorable. The guy playing the sheriff was good but it was too similar to his character from Django, I thought Tim Roth was just copying Christoph Waltz until the reveal. As for the actual plot, I feel like it could've been done better. It's a good twist it just felt a bit limp, Channing Tatum is just way too likeable to take seriously as a villain. Even after executing two people at close range in cold blood I still look at him and think "man what a nice guy that Channing Tatum is". It felt like the plot was there as a framework for the actors to let loose than anything else.

As an aside, I noticed Ennio Morricone in the opening credits and I remembered him saying he'd never work with Tarantino again because he never gave the music enough time to play. Then I looked at the run time and I went "ohhhh" so that was neat.

Just saw it today at a theater nearby showing it in 70mm, got the Roadshow book and everything. Not a giant movie buff either and this is my first finished Tarintino film, but this was amazing and I plan to finally finish Django and watch Pulp Fiction.
>>
>>64281047

I saw the roadshow version in 70mm, and it was fine, but in reality screen size matters when watching a 70mm film, and the screen I saw it on was not large enough - watching a 70mm print at a place like the Cinerama Dome (I saw Ben Hur and Lawrence of Arabia there), or at the Ziegfeld in New York is very different than the experience I had of the Hateful Eight. Also, a fair amount of theaters have had to switch to the digital projection anyway.

What the fuck did you just say about Lee Van Cleef? I'll have you know he was an undisputed good-guy in For a Few Dollars More, The Big Gundown, Sabata, Return of Sabata, is a redeemed former gangster turned gunslinger in Death Rides a Horse, and is a good guy who wants revenge on a man who wronged him, but was the childhood friend of the other protagonist in Days of Anger. He is only a villain in The Good, The Bad and The Ugly, and some minor support roles during the fifties for movies and TV shows.
>>
>>64281330

My Regal has these now, but it's still a theater that needs new screens and general renovation.
>>
>>64285130

Any movie wider than 1.76:1 will be letter boxed (which is basically all of them because even 1.85:1 is still wider), so what's the difference then between 2.35:1 or 2.76:1? All of the picture that was shot will still be on screen, there will just be more black unused space on top and bottom.
