> It's impossible at this point [for TFA to beat Avatar], for a number of reasons.
> TFA is dropping much faster overseas than it is domestically. The film made $281m total over its opening weekend Wednesday to Sunday overseas, a figure which includes $72.7m in its first two days of release (Wed/Thurs). Thus the film made $208.3m overseas during its first proper Fri-Sun weekend. Domestically, the film made $248m over its opening weekend Thurs evening to Sun, including $57m alone during the Thursday evening showings. Hence the film made $191m domestically in its first proper Fri-Sun weekend. Now, in its 2nd weekend, the film (is estimated to have) made $153.47 domestically, and $123.6m overseas. Calculating the drops, this is a 38.1% drop domestically from its entire Thurs-Sun opening weekend, and a 19.6% drop domestically from the proper opening weekend Fri-Sun. On the other hand, this is a 56.0% drop overseas from the entire Wed-Sun overseas opening weekend stretch, and a 40.7% drop overseas from the proper opening weekend Fri-Sun. So you can see the percentage drops for overseas are much bigger. A lot of people have been saying that the film will have "longer legs" overseas, but quite clearly this is not going to be the case at all.

> TFA has actually been outpaced by Avatar ALREADY overseas in its second weekend. Avatar made $152m overseas over its second weekend, outstripping the $123.6m made by TFA by a large margin. This is the biggest sign that TFA has absolutely no chance to outgross Avatar. A lot of people were predicting[1] that it would take at least until the 4th or 5th weekend for Avatar to begin outpacing TFA overseas, but to do it as early as its 2nd weekend (which I predicted could be the case[2] ) is a clear sign that the film is going to come nowhere close to Avatar's overseas gross. Note that Avatar was released under the EXACT same conditions in 2009 as TFA was, with the 2nd Friday of both of their releases being Christmas day, so nobody can argue about Christmas day closings affecting TFA's overseas 2nd weekend gross because it affected both films equally.

> Because the film is looking to have less legs overseas than domestically, the ratio 49.5%/50.5% of TFA's domestic/overseas gross as of the end of Sunday is likely to stay the same or get even worse as the weeks progress, barring the release of the film in China. I feel like I'm[3] --retreading[4] --myself[5] when I post this, but I'll make the same analysis here as I did days ago. Suppose now that the loftiest predictions come true and TFA makes $1b domestically. With an approximate 50/50 domestic/overseas ratio without China, this leaves the film with $1b overseas, so $2b worldwide total minus China. Thus, to equal avatar, the film would need to make $780m+ in China alone. This is clearly an impossible feat. (For the record, I do not necessarily believe that the film even has the legs overseas to make $1b without China (or domestically, for that matter), and I can see the domestic/overseas ratio actually shifting in favour of domestic before the release of China. This is just a "what if" scenario.)

Avatar: biggest criticism is its plot themes are borrowed. Based JC makes the physics and science realistic within the confines of his story. Creative as hell. Became #1 worldwide primarily on word-of-mouth.

TFA: So bad that Disney marketing got a "no spoilers" strategy going so everyone would see it ASAP. Plot holes and contrivances out the wazoo. Literally Marvel-tier. Nothing new except a Chrome stormtrooper. Dropping like a rock internationally where it needs word-of-mouth.

> Watching "Avatar," I felt sort of the same as when I saw "Star Wars" in 1977. That was another movie I walked into with uncertain expectations. James Cameron's film has been the subject of relentlessly dubious advance buzz, just as his "Titanic" was. Once again, he has silenced the doubters by simply delivering an extraordinary film. There is still at least one man in Hollywood who knows how to spend $250 million, or was it $300 million, wisely.

> "Avatar" is not simply a sensational entertainment, although it is that. It's a technical breakthrough. It has a flat-out Green and anti-war message. It is predestined to launch a cult. It contains such visual detailing that it would reward repeating viewings. It invents a new language, Na'vi, as "Lord of the Rings" did, although mercifully I doubt this one can be spoken by humans, even teenage humans. It creates new movie stars. It is an Event, one of those films you feel you must see to keep up with the conversation.

> At 163 minutes, the film doesn't feel too long. It contains so much. The human stories. The Na'vi stories, for the Na'vi are also developed as individuals. The complexity of the planet, which harbors a global secret. The ultimate warfare, with Jake joining the resistance against his former comrades. Small graceful details like a floating creature that looks like a cross between a blowing dandelion seed and a drifting jellyfish, and embodies goodness. Or astonishing floating cloud-islands.

> I've complained that many recent films abandon story telling in their third acts and go for wall-to-wall action. Cameron essentially does that here, but has invested well in establishing his characters so that it matters what they do in battle and how they do it. There are issues at stake greater than simply which side wins.

> Cameron promised he'd unveil the next generation of 3-D in "Avatar." I'm a notorious skeptic about this process, a needless distraction from the perfect realism of movies in 2-D. Cameron's iteration is the best I've seen -- and more importantly, one of the most carefully-employed. The film never uses 3-D simply because it has it, and doesn't promiscuously violate the fourth wall. He also seems quite aware of 3-D's weakness for dimming the picture, and even with a film set largely in interiors and a rain forest, there's sufficient light. I saw the film in 3-D on a good screen at the AMC River East and was impressed. I might be awesome in True IMAX. Good luck in getting a ticket before February.

> It takes a hell of a lot of nerve for a man to stand up at the Oscarcast and proclaim himself King of the World. James Cameron just got re-elected.

>it didn't beat avatar
I fail to see how that's relevant. The film is doing well. It's the first in the new trilogy and people will go back to watch the two sequels. There will then be all the merch money and possibly spin-off shows or cartoons which will garner more cash. Sure, the franchise will be milked to hell and back, but they can pull three films before suffering from franchise fatigue but even then make more cash on DVD sales and toy sales.

Disney will very easily get their $4B back.
>>
>>64168145
>I posted it again
Avatar stayed in theaters because it kept bringing in revenue. Why would they pull it if people still wanted to see it? That would be retarded.

And no, TFA won't have the same staying power.

The haters on tv just can't stomach the fact that TFA was derivative as fuck, but deliberately and unapologetically so. Because without derivative shit lifted right out of the default hero's story of myth, it's just not fucking star wars. Nothing in the original films was original. Big bad guy, lone youth goes on a journey with a rag tag band and wins in the end. That's essential for star wars to feel like Star wars. Without it you have prequel tier shit.
