I thought it was a good decision actually, for the same reason I liked that they revealed Kylo was Han's son earlier in the film, too. Made it easier to digest and less-sensational.

The movie just tried to shove too much into one movie. He definitely should've been unmasked before his confrontation with Han so they could humanize him and bring meaning to his struggle, but killing Han shouldn't have happened until the second movie.

First movie spends most of his time trying to be Vader with hints like his tantrums and Snoke telling us he isn't quite up to par. Second movie you really can get into his character and he kills his father and gets all fucked up. Leaves the third movie to deal with his personal fall from grace.
Biggest red flag for why it's in the first movie is they want his character arc to come full circle to good guy in time for the third movie. Boooooooooooooo!
