I recently rewatched season one. I have to say I didn't remember it as being so depressing. Most episodes end on good notes but there's a lot of sad, dark shit that happens but nothing edgy.
It has benefited from nostalgia goggles and people having shitty memories/not having watched the show at all, in that most people think it's just cool snarky banter between white and black cop as they're chasing a drug kingpin and Phil Collins sings a tune in the middle of it.

Miami Vice has it's share of cheese, but I'd definitely recommend seasons 1-2.
Liking 80's music is definitely a must.
