Where the fuck were the Russians? For like a decade now, and a few more years from now, Russia is the only country capable of sending people to the ISS. Not only were the Russians first ones in space, but they've be doing it CONSISTENTLY for decades. Even through the 90s when Russia was turned into a third world country.

This is why I only really liked two scenes/sequences from the movie, and one of them was less than a minute long:
1. when he knows his food supply is fucked and he's counting the potatoes he has left and there's a storm going on outside. He loses count and winces and moans and is clearly fucked up knowing that he might die.
2. when he makes that journey to the Ares IV craft in the rover, and he just has to lie there in the shade while the batteries recharge. Really brought his extreme loneliness up front after an hour of "haha disco joke".

Yes, those were the only two scenes that I remember that actually brought up how lonely he was. I know that was probably not the focus of the book or the movie too, but I didn't really get the feeling most of the time that there was any real danger to him physically or psychologically.

Not everyone responds to isolation the same way. That weird mountain man in Maine literally spent 17 years alone in the woods and never even saw another person and not only was he completely fine, when the police found him he was chatty and somewhat charismatic.
Not everyone collapses completely from isolation. He knew what he had to do to stay alive and he stayed focused on that.
