It was a tech demo, and it furthered his personal ambitions, which were developing filming tech for his personal pet projects. Imagine a man with so much money he doesn't know what to do with it.. but, he actually did know, had a plan, and did it? Chris Columbus? nah. He was drumming up support for his dive. He literally went where nobody had before.
