Why doesn't everyone in America live in LA or Miami. I know rent is expensive but it's affordable even on minimum wage, and you have a chance of earning a higher wage there. Are people just retarded?
>>
>>906683
The wage is higher but the rent and other costs are higher too, so there isn't much difference to other places. It all depends on what you like, if you're into surfing, then LA is the choice, but if you like skiing, you'd probably prefer Seattle or something.
>>
>Living in high-crime cities over-populated with welfare breeders and illegals while costs are ridculously high and one city is prone to hurricanes while the other is prone to droughts and fires

pass.

That ridiculous rent is not worth getting my ass kicked by a cat-5 storm or paying more for water than electricity
>>
>>906713
Yeah but, perfect weather. It's as hot as the south without ever really going past 100 because you're next the coast.
>>
>>906683
Moved from NYC to Miami recently. Seriously, your guess is as good as mine.

A lot of yuppies get stuck in well paying jobs, and a lot of people want to be near family and friends. Other than that, I don't know.
>>
>>906743
That's what I was thinking. I'm not lucky enough to be in the city, but I am in the state of new york. I always find myself asking how people can live in a place where they can't feel their face or fingers half the year.
>>
>>906713
>high crime
>water being expensive and not in surplus
Maybe LA, but not Miami. Oh and Miami hasn't had a hurricane since 2005.
>>906735
>perfect weather
Not really. It rains a lot.
>>
>>907037

>Since 2005

You do know that's very fucking recent for a city to be hit by a hurricane right?

I'd say Austin is a better city by miles, but because all of fucking California is moving here, please don't come.
>>
>>907039
I want to live in by the coast for the weather, don't care so much about employment rates
>>
>>907039
It's been nearly 10 years. And even when we did get hurricanes, the damage was never really bad at all. You have multiple weeks to prepare in advance- it isn't totally random like tornados and earthquakes.

>living so far from the coasts and lakes
Why would anyone subject themselves to such torture?
>>
>>907072

We have a lake though. Lake Travis.
>>
because other places suit my life style better ( I live in norcal) .... and I had I dream place to live it would be San Diego or Costa Mesa. LA Seems over rated to me
>>
>>907109
Hell who needs Lake Travis, there's a river/lake going through the middle of the city!
>>
>>907278

Why the hell would you want to come here instead of northern California? The weather is much hotter here

Why doesn't everyone just live in vegas?

piss cheap rent 15 minutes away from the strip, 16 age of consent, no income tax and endless fun and new people every day.

I lived in Las Vegas for a few years, was fun for sure but its a bit "dark" if you know what I mean. After a while though, I got a bit burnt out from it all.
>>
>>906683
I don't live in LA because I don't like to drive that much. I don't live in Miami because I don't care for humidity, beaches, or nightclubs, and I'm under 70. Also because I own a condo in San Francisco, so moving would be a hassle. So yeah, probably retarded.
>>
>>907946
I don't live in Vegas because it makes me want to kill myself after 48 hours. Also because I no longer drink or take drugs, and even 48 hours is too long sober.
>>
>>907998
Gotta get away from the 4 big tourist areas if you want to live there. Even a few blocks from downtown has ok apartments for decent prices and its pretty quiet. If you can afford it, go for a gated place to not worry about crime while you are at work. Once you get settled in and actually meet people who live there and develop some relationships its like any other city, maybe slightly more jaded though.

It did get surreal going to the strip/downtown though to see the party scene never change.
>>
>>907999
Yeah, I have a few friends who've lived there and enjoyed it, and I'm sure life in the actual neighborhoods bears no resemblance to what I've seen (I have never been anywhere but the Strip and Fremont St./downtown--and I'm not sure I've spent more than about an hour, total, outside on any of my visits).

i live in LA. it has its attractions, but it's a mess of urban sprawl. even if you had nothing tying you down to any location (such as job or family) i'd still pick other places to live. NYC is awesome, colorado is great for outdoorsy things, hawaii is hawaii... LA has boring weather, terrible traffic, is NOT that affordable on minimum wage because rent is expensive (you might live in a shitty area and never have disposable income). on the plus (or minus) side, hipster gentrification is pretty restrained to santa monica and east la. i'm trying to move to lake tahoe. skiing, outdoorsy shit, yosemite, plus SF is an hour away.

I'm from Florida. I don't live there because my family isn't there. it's still a 4 or 7 hour drive to the parts of Florida where my family is. Also i'm from a small town(pop 10,000), and miami just seems big and scary. I don't know spanish. all my friends are in my home town.

that being said, I've lived in d.c. and in japan, so now it seems very appealing to go to miami. i'm gunna visit, but i don't think i'd ever live there. alot of my friends don't wanna go there cuz they are afraid of having to speak spanish

the rent is reasonable because the housing bubble destroyed people's nest eggs, and they can't afford even reasonable homes now.

somehow or another, the prices of the homes reinflated even though more than half of them are vacant.

Vegas resident here. I recently bought a house in Newport for the summer because I am laid off during that time. Other than the unbearable summers and the short springs, it's pretty cool. I wish I could move to NYC but where else are you going to buy a $3k sq ft house for $200k.

Unless you're a [medical] professional, the only jobs worth getting are in the casinos. And you gotta know somebody [like everywhere else] to work there. I'm a food server and make $150k a year. Sports betting is my side income and I've made $400k this year mostly through MLB. Would have made another $80k if the cards would have won the series.

lelno

Tons of studies have recently come out and the general consensus is that you need to make around $17.50 an hour in Miami to be able to afford an place in an ok (meaning not-ghetto) area and live alone. That's not including gas and extra expenditures like going out.

Miami is a shit-tier city to live in unless you get transferred there with a $150k+ a year salary or if you're willing to welfare slum it up with a bunch of Cubans. It's a culturally devoid city unless you like ranting about Castro all day and the people are fucking fickle assholes. It's a melting pot of the worst parts of Latin America with none of the culture.

There are plenty of jobs in vegas, obviously the service industry is bigger than most cities, but get away from strip/downtown/sams/hend and its pretty much just like any other place. There is a lot of "diversity" in the population so get ready for that.

>>911279
Find an apartment complex that has onsite security, or get into a gated community. Some places there are kinda shitty. Its pretty much like any other city though, even with it being a major tourist area.

LA and Miami are overrated as fuck. You forgot to add the part that Miami is a shit hole, you go outside the beach front and it's all ghettos and section 8 housing.

>>907946

Having lived in Vegas for two years it's a shit hole, nothing more than a trashy tourist town in the middle of bumfuck nowhere. The city is an extension of LA but without all the sights and activities LA has to offer. And just like LA the city is shady as fuck which makes it extremely difficult to meet new people.

>or Miami. I know rent is expensive but it's affordable even on minimum wage, and you have a chance of earning a higher wage there. Are people just retarded?
Miami is known to have a disparately high cost of living, with less than adequate relative salaries. In other words, in places with this extreme cost of living, salaries should be much higher than currently low Florida wages. You pay a premium to live in Miami, and aside from some small sector of society making international wages, the majority of people have a horrible standard of living, likely neglecting retirement savings, piled up by the dozens in the same house, or commuting more than 3hrs of your life daily to get suburb prices, like in Homestead, or West Palm.

LA is a fucking dump. Especially Downtown LA, filled to the brim with Mexicans. You could walk 30 minutes and not see any other race. Have fun with the niggers in the surrounding cities. The freeways are beyond capacity all the time, so don't think about being on time anywhere. The clubs with filled with niggers and mexicans grinding on fat landpigs. Rent usually is 1k for a one bedroom, two bedroom 1.3-1.4k a month. Yes, you could afford it but don't think about eating.

>That ridiculous rent is not worth getting my ass kicked by a cat-5 storm or paying more for water than electricity
Florida has the cheapest electricity in the nation. Fact.
Even in summer months during a heat wave, most Floridians air conditioning at wasteful temps, including a salt cell 10-hour running pool pump (highest per capita home ownership of pools as well), will have bills LOWER than average winter heating in snowy states, whether gas or electricity. In fact, it has a surplus of electricity that is sold to other states throughout the winter months, and is even building an approved additional reactor at Turkey Point as we speak to make more money off of other states, and further lower the bills.

As far as hurricanes go? No other natural disaster gives you 14 day, or as little as a 3-5 day warning to get out or whatever you want, and a hurricane 5 is only cat-5, cat-4 windows in a concentrated swath. A cat-3 is NOT doing anything appreciable to house, car or neighborhood. Any spawned tornadoes are the kind that take out one room width in any house, nothing like a midwest twister. A few blocks might lose some tree branches, and anything else is certainly reparable, once you've saved your own life in preparedness.

Just moved to Florida from NY this year, can confirm.

My energy bills for a 1000 sq ft. house in New York were $300/mo. on average--they are now about $35/mo. for an apartment that's about 980 sq ft. So basically a tenth of the previous cost. My first bill kinda blew me away.

Florida is very cheap.
>>
>>916471
>Florida is very cheap.
Welcome to Florida! Additionally, only 7 states remain which have no state income tax. Florida is one of them. California is not.

Sounds to me like OP and a few others in this thread don't know anything about travel or having a job/paying bills. Not to mention that
>>906683 >Are people just retarded?
No. People with families, friends and jobs that tie them to locales determines where you live more than anything else. Until most people get to retirement age, they simply aren't willing to spend their precious 2-4 week vacations just flying home to see family in other citites and turning around to go back to work. They live closer for a reason, see them all the time, and use their time off to be off or see other parts of the world. Even at retirement age, this "where in the world shall we live if we're smart?" is heavily figured around where the grandkids live, as well as the weather on old bones, or financial concerns of fixed income.
>>
