Republic of Georgia was giving away farms for a while, but I'm not sure how easy it would be to live off the land there--I believe they were hoping skilled farmers would be able to rehabilitate agricultural land with low productivity.
Google "Turtle Island Preserve in NC" if you are interested in learning some skills for that sort of life. A bit on the hippie-dippy side, with a large helping of hero-worship for the founder, one Eustace Conway, but a pretty cool place all the same.

Friend spent a summer or three with them. I have visited while he was there, but did not do more than stay a night.
