Just south of Reno is Carson City, the Nevada state capital. There, there is a small, but epic train museum called the Nevada State Railroad Museum.

They have several working steam locomotives, including two that were built in 1875 (i.e.: legit trains that were actually in the Wild West that still run). They also have a couple of old-timey gas/diesel-powered railcar locomotives like pic related. There are several locomotives that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, but this little beauty in the pic is the only one with the higher distinction of being a National Historic Landmark (because rare...also sexy-looking). Definitely check this place out on 4th of July or Nevada Day (October 30) when they bring all of these out and give rides.

This place basically has the best set of working antique locomotives in the Western United States.

Is this a meme?
What the fuck is so wrong with Reno? Looks like it's got a great climate, it's smaller than Vegas sure but still plenty of fun casinos, and I love neon signage, what's so "sleazy" about that?

Continuing...

There is also a separate train-related thing east of Carson City called the Virginia & Truckee Railroad, which also has steam trains and gives rides, but it goes on an actual line through hills and stuff and not just encircling a museum compound. The reason why this part of the state is populated is because of a huge silver discovery called the Comstock Lode (teehee...lode), and the Virginia & Truckee was built to connect the mining towns to Carson City and Reno. Reno was and still is a major stop for the Transcontinental Railroad.

In the opposite direction to the west, there is Lake Tahoe. Tons of beautiful nature and famous for skiing. Close to the northern part of the lake is the famous Donner Pass, which of course is the pace where the Donner Party of pioneers got snowbound and had to eat their dead to survive. There is a monument there somewhere. Getting crazy amounts of snow in this spot is actually common, and I-80 going through it today is frequently closed in Winter due to being impassible from snow.

Oh, and Reno is where blue denim jeans were invented in 1871. The tailor that invented them filed a joint patent with his denim supplier, Levi Strauss, and they began mass-producing them in 1873 in San Francisco.

Reno is basically a has-been city. There are tons of neat things in that general area surrounding Reno, though.

I've lived in Reno my whole life.

Lots of degenerates downtown. In fact, everything dirty/trashy about Reno is contained Downtown, and Sun Valley I would say.

University is pretty good, especially for civil engineering (top 20 I think). CS is pretty good too, top 100.

If you're into outdoors, it's great. Lots of hiking and nature.

Peggs is a great breakfast restaurant.

If you need a job make the casino rounds, try to get a position with tips. I ended up waiting in one of the high end steak houses, at one of the major casinos, and the tips were rad. One night I took home $500, on average I would say $250 is closer to the norm. Mind you this was a ritzy place where a meal for 2 was often $150+.

kek...thats what they say about georgia crackers and texas queers

I just got back from Reno. I spent two weeks there.

I was surprised by how much I liked it. The city is very spacious and it's organized beautifully.

Anyone hating on Reno is an ignorant cunt.

Lmao

>>1117028
Isn't civil engineering one of those completely useless meme courses where grads bitch about the job market?
>>
>>1117028
A big employer there is a company that actually designs and makes the video slots machines. They need STEM guys and they pay relatively well compared to the cost of living and no income tax. Got to start somewhere, and Silicon Valley is crazy expensive for a new grad.

How do the young locals live? here should I hang out?

I live in South Lake Tahoe which is about an hour and a half from Reno. Reno's not bad, most of the "issues" the City might have is usually in downtown. They mostly have everything you could need but it doesn't compare to Las Vegas.

Joke Time.

Do you know why they call Reno "The Gate to Hell"? That's because when you get close enough to it, you can see "Sparks".

Side note: Sparks is the neighboring city.

And it's only 6-7 hours to go to the Redwoods.

Reno air races are in September. Go watch planes go nyoom.

And basically hiking, boating, hiking, boating, and then go do some more hiking and boating. Seriously, if you think there is a chance you'll leave the area, then you need to get in as many national parks and other nature areas as you can. Get a national park pass for the year, and then go go go.

And Reno sucks in regards to the cities around it. You can't compare it to major cities like Vegas or California cities and expect it to measure up. But if you go in with decently low expectations, then you're gonna do just fine. If you haven't traveled much, then it will be enough. Don't listen to the jaded people, or those who had to pass through Reno on the way from Point A to Point B. Almost every place has redeeming qualities if you're not expecting it to be something it's not. So enjoy it. And enjoy the beautiful stuff around it (get a good traveling vehicle). Enjoy.
