I have not stayed at the Del Rey, but I have hung out in the lobby bars and casino area. It and the two or three blocks around it are certainly the epicenter of the gringo sex tourism scene. I've read that the hotel itself is a perfectly pleasant low-4-star, perhaps a bit overpriced. Higher floors for less noise.

As for paying to play, it's not really my thing, but I was stunned by the quantity and impressed with the quality of talent... from one of the Del Rey's lobby bars, I watched a continuous line of women coming in to get their ID checked by door staff, and many were really beautiful.

I also had a few chats with women in the absurdly crowded bar off the lobby--almost no room to sit for all the working girls, who seemed to outnumber the punters three to one--and met ladies from all over Latin America and the Caribbean.

You should obviously be careful--San Jose is pretty dismal even if it's somewhat safer than the Central American average, and there's cocaine and speed around, which don't increase trustworthiness. But for a few days of whoring I think the Del Rey is a fine choice. If it were me, I'd leave the capital within 48 hours or so and head to a beach or a smaller city in the cloud forests or central highlands--Costa Rica is really gorgeous almost everywhere EXCEPT San Jose, and as sex work is legal, there are hookers everywhere.

Finally, there are several message boards dedicated to paid sex, including at least one forum just about the Costa Rican scene, so you'll probably get better advice about prices and etiquette there.

I liked the small historic city of Cartago, in the Central Valley, only a little ways from SJ. Just a little farther, there is whitewater rafting on... I think it's the Turrialba River, outside the rather sleepy town of Turrialba. Less than two hours by car from the Del Rey, and highways are quite good. Tamarindo is a party/resort beach town on the Pacific side, maybe 4hrs away; I went to smaller, more relaxed, slightly scruffier Limon, on the Caribbean coast.

Incidentally, I didn't actually sleep in the city of Limón, although I was in Limón Province; That's just where I took a bus to from SJ (roughly 3 hrs, a little closer than the Pacific-side resorts). I actually stayed in the town of Cahuita, around 30mi south of central Limón down the coast. Limón proper is pretty big.
