I live in Mexico. Stay away from Tamaulipas, Sinaloa, Michoacan, Guerrero(Acapulco is ok).
You can find hiking and forests in the north, beautiful colonial-era (1600s) small towns (very rich in history and traditions) in mid mexico, and lots of aqua sports, great beaches and night life in southern mexico. I really recommend Cancun and Playa del Carmen.

since im close by in california, yes. been to tj a few times and passed through a lot driving to san felipe a dozen or so times.
stayed a month in mexico city, month in morelia, and a month in some smaller towns on the east side of michaocan. spent a couple days in guanajuatos main city.
did some more touristy stuff in playa del carmen and cancun. was probbaly more fun than i wouldve had because we knew locals
mexico city imo, was too much to really take in... i think id have to live there. the small towns in michaocan were beautiful and relaxing... just enoying posadas and that small town vibe. morelia was pretty exciting and i always have fun in baja.
probably baja is your best bet if you want to unwind without any connections to the area. you can rent a house by the beach, grab some dirtbikes, go to some small clubs, get wasted blah blah or just relax.
I live 2 miles away from Tijuana, I can literally see the city from my front yard. I've gone there many times through the years. Lots of great places to eat, cheap and fun bars, and the like.
I've also gone to Ensenada, greatly enjoyed the experience. Spent some time near Toluca with relatives 20 odd years ago, would go back if the area wasn't ridden with crime.

Central Eastern part is the best. Hit up San Luis Potosi, Xilitla, Las Pozas/Castillo de James Edwards, Jalapa, Popocatepetl, Pico de Orizaba, the mountains from the Gulf coast and further inland are super gorgeous. Also not in the area, but Oaxaca is a pretty charming town.

If you dont know locals you arent gonna find much to do in smaller cities, but the scenery is nice in many places, ranging from flat and brown to mountainous and green.
There are many bus companies in mexico and getting around is easy. Just know they close the bathrooms a lot of the time and they will prob advertise wifi on bus but it almost never works. You will also most likely get stopped at 4am to get all your shit searched a few times

I've been to Baja and various places around Mexico City. Worse that happened was I got pick-pocketed when I got lost and ended up in a place the guidebook said not to go.
The people were very friendly and many parts were quite beautiful. I really liked Teotihuacan and the aztec ruins in Mexico City. Crossing the border into the US is ugly and a pain in the ass. Oh and it is not all Cancun, outside of tourist areas English is very uncommon.

Most of the south is relatively safe if you're not stupid. Funny thing is there are way more European than American backpackers because of all that fear the media is pushing. Don't get me wrong they are places in Mexico I would never go for a million pesos but then again nothing interesting in those places.
I live in Mexico City and I can assure you that it is very safe. Here´s some places Ive been to that i would like to share:
If you want to go to tropical places then I would recommend Ixtapa Zihuatanejo, Acapulco (kinda dangerous for now), Cancun (a lot of american lifestyle), Puerto Vallarta, Los cabos, Huatulco, Playa del Carmen, Veracruz, and Oaxaca. If you want to go to colder places, there`s Mexico City (HUGE CITY with lots of fun stuff to do), Guadalajara (lovely place to be!), Aguas Calientes, EDO. MEX(bunch of natural habitats and culture), Guanajuato, and Zacatecas.
Some pyramids and their locations:
Chichen Itza (Yucatan, around 4 hours from Cancun)
Teotihuacan (EDO. MEX, around 2-3 hours from Mexico city)
Edzna (Campeche)
Becan (Campeche)
Tulum (Quintana Roo, around 3-4 hours from cancun)
There's honestly a lot of places you can visit in Mexico however, not all of them are safe.

If you guys had 3 weeks to spend in Mexico, where would you go? I've started reading a lonely planet (sorry real /trv/lers) and I'm overwhelmed 'cause this country looks amazing. I am a US citizen taking a sailboat to the Panama canal and up to the east coast. I am currently just in Cabo, but I have visited almost everywhere on the west coast of Baja, in addition to La Paz.
I entered the country in Ensenada. What a great city.
Bahia Tortugas is a halfway point between Ensenada and Cabo San Lucas that is little more than a fuel dump. I spent about 3 weeks there on the hook doing boat repairs. It's a shanty town, but the locals are very nice. The bay comes alive with drug smugglers at night though. Businesses are usually closed from 12-4 due to ciesta. It's been devastated by a hurricane several decades ago but never rebuilt.
I spent two days in Man O' War cove in Magdalena Bay to take a break from the crazy Baja rollers and winds. It's irregular according to everyone I've spoken to. This is a town of about 50 with one restaurant that is never open.
Cabo San Lucas is a fucking tourist zoo. It's basically Vegas. San Jose Del Cabo is much nicer and quieter. La Paz is also a nice, quiet beach community.
I will be leaving for Puerto Vallarta in a week or so.

Bundle up - Catorce is 8000ft up in the mountains. Shit gets cold. I went a couple months ago for 3 days - it's a kinda spooky lost in the mist mountain village. Slow pace of life. Steep and rough to walk on, all cobblestone streets. Be in good shape, good shoes, etc. No idea about peyote. I'm sure if the price is right somebody will have a few horses and an afternoon to spare to go searching. One guy offered to show me "fantomas del deserto" when I walked by his horses. I passed on it. Probably dudes in sheets popping out of cactuses.
Instead of the horsemen you might have better luck asking people from the indigenous tribes there, since peyote is their thing. There is a hill outside of town that has great ceremonial value to lots of the local groups. Peyote or not, the 1 mile donkey cart ride through a sketchy-looking mining tunnel just to get into town is totally worth it.
Oh, and there is only 1 ATM in Catorce and it always seemed to be out of order - bring extra cash.
