I live in Mexico. Stay away from Tamaulipas, Sinaloa, Michoacan, Guerrero(Acapulco is ok).
You can find hiking and forests in the north, beautiful colonial-era (1600s) small towns (very rich in history and traditions) in mid mexico, and lots of aqua sports, great beaches and night life in southern mexico. I really recommend Cancun and Playa del Carmen.
>>
Been to Mexico a gorillon times. It's great.
>>
>>1058344
I'm currently seeking for people who'd like to road trip northern Mexico with a city called Todos Santos as destination cause there's gonna be a music festival and am really excited to see Death Cab live (first time ever in Mexico I think)
But most people have the misconception that roads here are death sentences. Anyone up for an adventure?
>>

Death cab for cutie is playing in Mexico?
When is this all going down?
>>
>>1058439

It's the baja, a little different than the other northern states. Baja has for the most part been pretty safe for tourists.

It's between january 20-23. Reserved tickets are sold out but on the day and standing up tickets are about 2 dollars each (50pesos) and final day it's completely free

since im close by in california, yes. been to tj a few times and passed through a lot driving to san felipe a dozen or so times.

stayed a month in mexico city, month in morelia, and a month in some smaller towns on the east side of michaocan. spent a couple days in guanajuatos main city.

did some more touristy stuff in playa del carmen and cancun. was probbaly more fun than i wouldve had because we knew locals

mexico city imo, was too much to really take in... i think id have to live there. the small towns in michaocan were beautiful and relaxing... just enoying posadas and that small town vibe. morelia was pretty exciting and i always have fun in baja.

probably baja is your best bet if you want to unwind without any connections to the area. you can rent a house by the beach, grab some dirtbikes, go to some small clubs, get wasted blah blah or just relax.
>>
I live 2 miles away from Tijuana, I can literally see the city from my front yard. I've gone there many times through the years. Lots of great places to eat, cheap and fun bars, and the like.

I've also gone to Ensenada, greatly enjoyed the experience. Spent some time near Toluca with relatives 20 odd years ago, would go back if the area wasn't ridden with crime.
>>
http://www.chinatown-bus.org/

Chinatown bus actually has buses from California all the way down to Guadalajara. The entire list of cities that go from California to Mexico is.

Tijuana
Caborca
Ciudad Obregon
Culiacan
Empalme
Guadalajara
Guasave
Guaymas
Hermosillo
Ixtlan del Rio
Los Mochis
Mazatlan
Mexicali
Navojoa
San Luis Rio Colorado
Sonoyta
Tepic

It looks interesting to go from Stockton, the closest California stop to me, all the way down to Mexico via bus. It would take 48 hours to go from Stockton to Guadalajara via this bus, which is something I don't have the patience for.

If you dont know locals you arent gonna find much to do in smaller cities, but the scenery is nice in many places, ranging from flat and brown to mountainous and green.

There are many bus companies in mexico and getting around is easy. Just know they close the bathrooms a lot of the time and they will prob advertise wifi on bus but it almost never works. You will also most likely get stopped at 4am to get all your shit searched a few times

Tourist areas are nice, but a lot of hotels will try to gouge you. You paid extra for all inclusive? Lolno, says right here you didn't. That'll be $300 for a shitty sandwich.

Mexico in general is shitty. They polish the hell out of their resort areas to make them remotely decent.
>>
>>1058344
Yes.
It was the shittiest awesome experience ever. Mexicans hate white people, target them and steel from them, and then go to the US and demand we change our laws to benefit them and give them free money, housing, and travel. The whole place smells like shit, they leave their trash on the side of the road where NOBODY picks it up, and none of them speak English, which I found ironic.

>>
I've been to Baja and various places around Mexico City. Worse that happened was I got pick-pocketed when I got lost and ended up in a place the guidebook said not to go.

The people were very friendly and many parts were quite beautiful. I really liked Teotihuacan and the aztec ruins in Mexico City. Crossing the border into the US is ugly and a pain in the ass. Oh and it is not all Cancun, outside of tourist areas English is very uncommon.

I live in Mexico City and I can assure you that it is very safe. Here´s some places Ive been to that i would like to share:
If you want to go to tropical places then I would recommend Ixtapa Zihuatanejo, Acapulco (kinda dangerous for now), Cancun (a lot of american lifestyle), Puerto Vallarta, Los cabos, Huatulco, Playa del Carmen, Veracruz, and Oaxaca. If you want to go to colder places, there`s Mexico City (HUGE CITY with lots of fun stuff to do), Guadalajara (lovely place to be!), Aguas Calientes, EDO. MEX(bunch of natural habitats and culture), Guanajuato, and Zacatecas.
Some pyramids and their locations:
Chichen Itza (Yucatan, around 4 hours from Cancun)
Teotihuacan (EDO. MEX, around 2-3 hours from Mexico city)
Edzna (Campeche)
Becan (Campeche)
Tulum (Quintana Roo, around 3-4 hours from cancun)
There's honestly a lot of places you can visit in Mexico however, not all of them are safe.
Have fun!

Guys, is it better to head over with USD and exchange them on the black market (like Argentina) or are ATM's pretty much the same exchange rate?

Also, if anyone wants to meet up, I fly in on the 30th of December and will be there for around a month!
>>
>>1062536
Yes, there is.

There´s also a bunch of apps for safe taxis.

However, all registered taxis at the airport are safe and have stock fares.
>>
>>1062545
I fly in on the 26th and will be there for two weeks, ok lets meet.
>>
>>1062545

Forget about that black market shit.

You can either come with USD,there are plenty exchange houses (casas de cambio) at the airport or at any important district

or

You can use ATMs (Dont worry, the exchange rate is pretty much the same)
>>
>>1062546
any idea what average rate is? I'm poor so it matters, sorry
>>
>>1062554

Around $17 pesos per usd.

Although it varies a little bit from bank to bank or from one exchange house to another
>>
>>1062556
Thank you but I've already exchanged at my bank, and I Googled that rate.

I meant the taxi fare rate per mile, sorry. Are you a local?
>>
>>1062559

Sorry, I was replying to>>1062545

It depends, but the rate isnt based on miles, rather than in "zones", which that the further you go from the airport, the more expensive it gets.

Rates go from $150 to $230 pesos.

Depends on which part of the centro (downtown) you want to go.

Yes, I live in Mexico City

[email protected] is my throwaway. Hit me up and we'll figure something out. Anyone else who wants to meet up is welcome to - I've always wanted to meet someone from /trv/

If you guys had 3 weeks to spend in Mexico, where would you go? I've started reading a lonely planet (sorry real /trv/lers) and I'm overwhelmed 'cause this country looks amazing. I hate travelling countries half-assed but it seems like Baja alone would need like 2 weeks. And Mexico city could easily take 1. But I also want to go south to Oaxaca and area + maybe Belize.

Also, how's the hostel culture? I usually CS but I sort of can't be fucked to write requests right now.
>>
>>1062819
Check Oaxaca capital city for sure at least for 5 days
>>
>>1062819
Every city has a different hostel culture. But generally you can probably expect to stay with lots of Aussies and lots of Argentinians. Just do some research beforehand and check out their reviews. I always booked thru hostelworld out of familiarity but Hola Hostels is the Latin American hostel network. Just like any time I've stayed in a hostel,
1. It's what you make of it
2. Sometimes you get stuck with cunts
>>
Is there anything interesting and safe to do in Mexico City later at night?

I'd love to meet some people but I'm not much of a partier cuz loud music scares me and I don't drink alcohol, plz no bully
>>
Do yhry poo in the loo
>>
>>1062921
What exactly do you expect to do at night if not drinking? You can always walk around neighborhoods like Coyoacan, but don't know why you'd rather do this at night than during the day
>>
>>1062819
In 3 weeks you can easily visit Mexico City, then take a bus to Oaxaca, check out nearby sites like Mitla, Monte Alban, Hierve el Agua and try out the local cuisine, then move further south to Chiapas, which also has a ton to offer (Palenque and other Mayan sites, San Cristobal) and you could travel from there to Guatemala or Belize or into the Yucatan
>>
>>1063160
Where do you like to drink then?
It must be at night for great justice.

>>
>>1058452
>>1058590
>>1059952

Just stick to traveling while the sun is still up, mexican roads at night ARE a death sentence.
>>
>>1063599
Yes. People here steal everything they can even electricity counters of houses along cupper tubes for water and gas. Put padlocks in your bag to reduce the chance of pickpocket. Are you a tard ir just a naive dude?
>>
>>1063650
If you are not mexican do not travel alone at nights even more if you dont know the path or using GPS along toll roads.
>>
>>1063599
Generally speaking, you'll only get fucked with if you're alone at night, and especially if you're drunk. Mexicans aren't very big people so most average Westerners tower over them. That said, always lock your shit up. Put something down, and expect it to be stolen. I had my phone and shirt stolen my last day in Mexico because I went for a swim and expected my mates to watch my stuff, they didn't.
>>
>>1060645
I can assure you this fucker has never been to mexico

This
>Dont travel alone
>Dont tavel at night
>Keep in touch with family / friends
>Try not to look too touristy
>DO NOT HAVE ANY DRUGS WITH YOU. Specially on the road, that is why the surfers got killed probably.
Also:
If you get pulled over by authorities (Military or police) and try to get extorted just give them some money. It happens to us mexicans too.

Follow this simple advice and you will be safe
>>
>>1063748
>don't travel alone

>>
>>1063682
Honestly, I've travelled quite a lot but I've never been Mexico/South/Central America. I'm pretty aware of my situation but I'm trying to figure out if it's a whole different beast as I'm doing South/Central America later on this year.

Do I have to be one of those guys that wears the hidden wallets under my shirt and all of that crap? I mean, I'm pretty good of staying out of trouble, don't dress flashy and I'm not white (I can pass for a lot of ethnicities).

I travel alone for the most part and like doing it and don't mind doing it on the cheap (in transit) so I can spend more when I get to the destination.

I am a US citizen taking a sailboat to the Panama canal and up to the east coast. I am currently just in Cabo, but I have visited almost everywhere on the west coast of Baja, in addition to La Paz.

I entered the country in Ensenada. What a great city.

Bahia Tortugas is a halfway point between Ensenada and Cabo San Lucas that is little more than a fuel dump. I spent about 3 weeks there on the hook doing boat repairs. It's a shanty town, but the locals are very nice. The bay comes alive with drug smugglers at night though. Businesses are usually closed from 12-4 due to ciesta. It's been devastated by a hurricane several decades ago but never rebuilt.

I spent two days in Man O' War cove in Magdalena Bay to take a break from the crazy Baja rollers and winds. It's irregular according to everyone I've spoken to. This is a town of about 50 with one restaurant that is never open.

Cabo San Lucas is a fucking tourist zoo. It's basically Vegas. San Jose Del Cabo is much nicer and quieter. La Paz is also a nice, quiet beach community.

I will be leaving for Puerto Vallarta in a week or so.

so I'm planning to go to Mexico City and then to Cancun for abut a week

the only problem is that my timing sort of only allows me to go there around the beginning of September...

so I've done a basic check on weather trends on wikipedia and it doesn't look too good (pic related)

do I have any chance of sunny weather while there or is it full rain every day during autumn? I honestly don't know how it works over there, was hoping someone passed by during September and could share

I know it's also a matter of luck to some extent

Old thread, but I figure I should post here before starting a new one.

I'm going to visit Durango for a couple of weeks this summer. I'll be staying in the city, with a lovely senorita I met a year or two ago as a language partner.

I already know of a few things I want to do while I'm there, but I was wondering if anyone here knew of any cool shit an American might like inside of, or around, Durango. She has a car too, so we aren't strictly limited to the immediate area.
>>
>>1065845
Durango is pretty boring. Enjoy being bored to death
>>
>>1065971
Durango is where she lives, but I already know we're going as far as Mazatlán, and maybe even Mexico City, so it's not like I'll be trapped in the city the whole time. Cars and motel rooms are a thing.

I just don't know much about what's actually in that part of Mexico. I've mostly only heard about Cancun the Yucatan area, and closer to the US border.
>>
>>1065845
Family is from Durango, but it isn't very exciting. Although it does have a western loneliness appeal to it so I quite like it. If you know someone that lives there then you'll be set m8.
>>
>>1065355

Hey guys,

Are Mexican women promiscuous? Like, generally speaking, I guess. Is it frowned upon to make a move on them, for example? I've always found them gorgeous and I tend to somehow end up hooking up with my hosts but wouldn't want to overstep if it's taboo.

I'm down here now at Chetumal if anyone has bright ideas on what to see or where to go. Fucking off for moralos in a couple of days.

My friend and I are thinking of traveling to Real de Catorce to look for peyote in the nearby desert. I've never been to Mexico and although I'm sure a lot of the danger is overplayed in US culture, I'm still a little worried. Getting robbed wouldn't be the end of the world but I'd rather make it back home in one piece.

Any suggestions about Mexico/Real de Catorce/peyote picking?

Bundle up - Catorce is 8000ft up in the mountains. Shit gets cold. I went a couple months ago for 3 days - it's a kinda spooky lost in the mist mountain village. Slow pace of life. Steep and rough to walk on, all cobblestone streets. Be in good shape, good shoes, etc. No idea about peyote. I'm sure if the price is right somebody will have a few horses and an afternoon to spare to go searching. One guy offered to show me "fantomas del deserto" when I walked by his horses. I passed on it. Probably dudes in sheets popping out of cactuses.

Instead of the horsemen you might have better luck asking people from the indigenous tribes there, since peyote is their thing. There is a hill outside of town that has great ceremonial value to lots of the local groups. Peyote or not, the 1 mile donkey cart ride through a sketchy-looking mining tunnel just to get into town is totally worth it.

Oh, and there is only 1 ATM in Catorce and it always seemed to be out of order - bring extra cash.
