We always seem to discuss travel things we dislike, or the walking memes we encounter, what travelers do you love?

My favorite is the old British business man. These guys are usually mad cool, have great stories and insight, and won't let you spend a dime. Pic related. Irish banker and his GF I hung with for a few days. Even stayed in his business suite at a 5 star hotel, because it had an extra bedroom.

Hey, it ain't tricking if you got it!
>>
Hahaha

Well memed, op
>>
>>1051341
Meme, what meme?

There was also this older British dude when I went to the K1 race, business man type, who I ran into in a hip hop club. All drinks were on him, though my friend, another guy, was weirded out when we went to leave and he went to shake his hand. The Brit pulled him for a hug and gave him a peck. As an American he just kind of froze and was like "wtf just happened"
>>
>>1051347

That's gotta suck. Being that old that the only way you can get women interested in you is by buying them anything they want
>>

>>
>>1051349
You when I was with dude, this was like day two or three. At one point he was close to tears. And remarked something like, "I don't how to repay you guys (talking about me and my gf, and I guess his, too), you have shown me so much friendship and kindness and I have nothing to offer you in return". I told him it goes both ways, his friendship is offering enough. But in the back of my head I was thinking, "do you realize how much coin you are spending?". But hell, he is a banker, he probably wrote it all off as business expenses. He even took my girl shopping.
>>
So no one else has a traveler or local type they love to encounter while traveling? 4chan is all hate and discontent I see. Even on /trv/
>>
>enjoying third-wheeling with an old white guy and young Asian girl couple

Whatever floats your boat, family.

I find that American girls abroad come in two flavours - a huge amount of fun or a massive pain in the ass. When they're fun, they make any night better though.

One thing I dislike though, is one of those situations where it's like five guys give huge amounts of attention to like two girls in a group, it just makes the whole conversation feel weird

Hey man, sounds like you've met a cool guy. I've also met couple of english businessmen - same story - really warm and doesn't let paying.

I like those free-spirited people who are still standing on solid ground, usually really kind and warming. I prefer emphatic people.

I like party animals that are OPEN.

Nothing worse than a group of loud people who are all together... Until you join that group. Then, it's gravy.

I just like open people. The kind that will instantly get to know you when you rock up to the hostel by yourself and hand you a beer, invite you to join their meal or pass you the joint. I find this is far more common outside of party locations. I like the generally more mature and intelligent groups you come across in hostels in places like Africa.
>>
non crazy homeless people. I don't know why i find these people so endearing.
>>
I love the friendly local with the inside scoop. Have found gems from cab drivers, and rental car workers in Spain, and Italy, among other places. The one with that insider tip you won't find in Lonely Planet. Thank you
>>
>>1051333
South African white people are super nice, I always enjoy having a meal with them. Not big partyers, but really good people.
>>
>>1051354

>>
>>1051537
Man when I lived in Korea there were a decent number of White South Africans there working as English teachers and I found white South African girls to be some of the most uniformly haughty, stuck up and insufferably posh people I've ever met. I met 3 different SA girls there and they all had the same shit personality. Of course 3 is quite a small sample size, but what are the odds all three of them would be the same way unless it's an illustration of a larger trend. The SA guys on the other hand were very chill and friendly, much like Kiwis.

Anyone else have this experience with South Africans?
>>
I like the travelers that respond positively when I try to open them up to fucking or even kissing.

Locals are nice too.

For non sex related things, anyone with a story to tell.
>>
>>1051576
I experienced the exact opposite, but then again I only met two, so we're up to a sample size of 5.
>>
>>1051576
All South Africans I have meet are kind and friendly, both guys or girls. Good people to talk and party too.
My favorite travelers, side by side with Brazilians.
>>
>>1051649
What do you like about Brazilians? My only experience with them are the hoards at Florida theme parks.

Similar this, I love to meet the local travel girlfriend. Your very own tour guide and translator.

>>
My favourite is when your travelling alone and you meet that special person where they make your trip much better. They just add that special touch on the special moments.
>>
>>1051656
Absolutely true. Had some great experiences with American travellers - girls and guys - but one or two I would rather forget. Nothing terrible, just deathly boring. One girl in particular tried to engage me in conversation about the regional variations in BBQ sauce found in the USA. The booze helped take the edge off that chat.

The absolute worst are groups of Australian blokes. Often thick as pigshit - one asked me which of the world wars Elvis Presley fought in. Also, I'm down for a night's drinking, but I swear that Aussies travel around purely to find another backdrop to their alcoholism and braying stupidity.

I met one really nice Aussie, travelling alone and trying to steer clear of his countrymen. I also met a girl travelling on her own in a van who seemed cool until alcohol touched her lips, at which point she turned into the biggest whore known to man. Spent the rest of the evening flopping her udders out and slurring "whyn'cha come back to my van?" at anything that slightly resembled a male human being.

Swedish travellers seem educated and respectful. Irish guys have a wry sense of humour and are keen to give anything a go. I like them both.
>>
>>1051333
Agree with a lot of these comments - Americans are really nice people in small groups, South Africans and the Irish are pretty cool, Northern Euros are nice but much more reserved.

In terms of travellers I generally like, desu it's anyone who's up for doing a bit of exploring and trying new shit without being a dickhead to other travellers or the locals.
>>
>>1051702
So did you fuck her in her van or not?
>>
>>1051736
Nobody would touch her, not even the middle aged pervert that every hostel is seemingly obliged to accommodate.
>>
>>1051745
Why not? Put a condom on and fuck her. Or was she ugly?

Americans are nice. They are always genuinely interested in your country and culture and ask you a lot of questions.

Brits make good drinking buddies. They have good sense of humor.

Aussies are generally kind of bad. They all come off as dumb as shit and are either fat cunts or else wannabe sickcunts.

I don't really like continental Europeans that much these days. All the guys seem to be really fuckboi and overly fashionable. They all have that Hitler Youth haircut and walk around like they're the hottest shit.
>>

Shame. Probably could have put in her butt

1. You can't even see my GF face
2. That other girls has heaps of plastic surgery on her face, btw. Mines all natural.
3. This was over a year ago and we're still together. One of the things I like about her is the fact that she is not the type of woman to be in your pockets all the time.

But whatevs.
>>
>>1051778
But it is true. As OP stated older guys are better
>>
I met a Chinese Aussie dude at the hostel I was at and he was one of the coolest people I hung out with during that trip.

I guess to answer the question: people who are at crossroads but actually know where they're going.
>>
Countrymen wise:

Single Americans or small groups are fun, especially when they're mixed groups of guys and girls. Sometimes you get dumb comments but honestly Americans are the most "let's explore and learn" culture I've seen from most so it's refreshing to meet someone out seeing historical sites and not "Ey this pub is famous for its expat scene m8"

Also just from random encounters, Mexicans are fucking amazing and always happy and even though they're loud as fuck and a complete mess, Spaniards can be fun for a night out.

The worst are fucking Aussie men. As >>1051702 said, every time you encounter them they're just fucking wasted to shit and have the worst attitudes.

And then travel type wise, I really like the slightly-closed off single-traveler, the one who you can have a great conversation with about some random thing wherever you're at and then you're off. No commitments or info exchanged.

I also tend to have a good time with families who have older kids (18+) traveling together. They're usually pretty nice and will help you out or give you good tips.

Old British people are great to meet when in other countries because they always carry that sort of confidence that's relaxing. Older Brits always seem like they are out on a stroll across the Empire even if it's the middle of nowhere. You'll be in a place and you'll be discombobulated and you'll stick out, and out of nowhere a British guy will come over and offer you a beer.

British tourists to where I live are less fun though. Never really bad, just in full vacation mode and not travel mode.

Meeting Mexicans or Caribbean Islanders is always fun, since they are pretty rare and often have good stories for how they ended up where ever they are. Cuban doctors, Jamaican singers, that sort of thing.

Young, White Africans are generally great for drinks and discussing any topic, but they can have some weird headtrips about race and colonialism and shit which can be awkward.

Any traveler who doesn't understand the basics of the place they are in, or who doesn't care, is instant dislike. Being apathetic to the politics or the situation around them, just there to see some sights, that is terrible. This is way, way, way worse when in a shitty country. If you are going to a shitty place that generally sucks for the people who have to live there, at least be aware of how fucking ridiculous that is.

My favorite travelers though are people like me, just lucky and finding ways to get around with no real objective or plans. Just nice to find yourself in far flung place and laugh about how absurd it is that you could end up there.

I always find myself sitting down alongside older world-weary folk whenever I travel. Something about that old and world-weary wisdom makes them really easy to talk to and really cool to hear about all their life experiences, even their most mundane ones.

I remember one time I was taking the bus through Maine to get to Canada and I ended up sitting down with this old retired guy that looked vaguely like Mark Hamill. Turns out he'd been a government nature preservation worker, a five-star chef, and an IT admin before coming back home to Maine. It made me realize how many lives a person could live and how much better it was to live as many as possible instead of being confined to a boring day-to-day slog.

I recently learned my favorite kind of travelers are Syrian arms dealers. Moved to China recently and was getting myself all of that visa nonsense. Guy looked like a bond villain. My first thought was literally, "why are they letting this man walk around without a police escort?" A very sweet soul, but looked like a straight up bond villain. Probably why he was so happy to have company. I can't even remember what strange series of events had me sit down with him for lunch after finishing up at the immigration office (or whatever China calls it). I would have taken a picture with him, but because of his work I was actually a little frightened to.

Because I asked him where he was from, Syria, and when I asked him what he was doing in China he told me, "I sell <pause as he swallows a bite of spicy beef> certain merchandise to the Chinese military." I wish I could make this up. His daughter and wife lived in Germany while his son lived in Dubai.

I'll second this, old guys can be really interesting. I met this old Rhodesian dude called Brian on the top of Table Mountain after we'd walked past each other on the way up. He'd been a sailor and had been to pretty much every country with a coastline, was mortared in Mogadishu in the 80s, and fought in the bush war. I also met this 70 something year old black American dude in Ethiopia who had been a full on militant black panther back in the day and had killed a bunch of white people in Tanzania who he reckoned were South African intel dudes. Now he was totally chilled out and peaceful, just smoking weed and doing hookers.
>>
>>1051969
Yea these guys really like to be public about there work.

I'am sorry that your life is so boring that you have to make up stories in a Chinese cartoon forum.
>>
>>1052010
Not that guy, but having kept the company of less than savory characters you'd be astonished at how open they can be about what they do, depending on the environment. Some of thus is hitting the news with the Paris thing. Molenbeek is becoming a household name, but if you're a criminal or in the intelligence community, or pay more than passing attention to world events, it's well known that's the place to go to get arms. That's where the weapons in a slew of terrorists attacks have originated.

Yes I'm fat, alcoholic and partial to indulging in other mind altering substances (though only in locations that won't result in me doing hard time in some shit hole prison)
But yes. I will admit that the travellers that annoy me the most are the groups of Aussie bogans.
But who do I like? Im middle aged and travel solo, so I find that I generally meet travellers in similar situations.
Have no particular favorite, just anyone that's up for a drink and a laugh.
I also enjoy to exchange info + - with anyone.
Oh yeah, every bar in the world will have its resident " ex special forces " guy or mercenary or arms dealer. Kek

Americans. As much as /trv/ likes to shit on them, has anyone noticed it's typically observational gripes? "They only speak English", "They are oblivious", "America sucks" . But when people actuality share travel stories/interactions the ones with Americans are overwhelmingly positive? American travelers always seem to have a genuine interest, wonder, and warmth. Even if many say it is not genuine. They still make for pleasant travelers and tend to be great conversationalist, provided you speak English. Also very generous.

Kind of the fence with Americans, found them to be alright people, some of them kind of dumb but my biggest issue them is their sense of humour (or lack of). Being a Brit, we have a sarcastic dry sense of humour and the yanks just so not get it and often get quite offended.
>>
>>1053391
Yeah, indeed. I've had run-ins with aggressive Australians and Israelis, but I can't imagine Americans purposefully fucking shit up. Most of those I met would be very capable of doing it, physically, but when stuff come to a head, they were always the ones calming everyone down.

Its not the dry humor or sarcasm, we have that as well.
The problem is the personal insults and use of the word Cunt.
I love the ricky gervais show, but if he said the things he says to Karl to an american, he is gonna get punched.
You just dont get to make personal attacks like that here even in the name of humor, not even to your best friend.

>>1053398>>1053391
As an American I would say that it's pretty easy to separate a U.S. traveler into groups. Personally my least favorite type of traveler is the ignorant, oblivious, egotistical U.S. traveler who can't recognize different cultural etiquette. On the other hand there is a decent sized group of us that are more experienced travelers and we are aware of our stereotypes/privilege/self-centeredness. We're a very polar country (in just about every way possible) and I'd say our travelers reflect this. As for our lack of humor, you're talking to the wrong Americans. Believe me there are a ton of us who love the dry sarcastic wit of the Isles, but unfortunately we're in the minority. I think a few of us are a little surprised by the openness of some Brit's as in the U.S. a lot of the dry/sarcastic/insulting jokes that we make are a little more on the DL (which addresses the our lack of sincerity), but we definitely make them.

And I'd say some of my favorite (and definitely funniest) travelers I've met have been Brits. The experienced British, witty, foul-mouthed man is easily won of the best travelers to be around. Although the best may just be an old-monied woman from New England who curses like a dog (the best part about her is that she disgusts all the ingenuous, ignorant born again Christian Americans from the South).

>>
>>1053412
it's more than that though. you tend to keep each other down with cutting humor.
you always make sure no one rises above their station.
this is not acceptable to an american.
>>
>>1053415
This is true. Its how we determine who is the alpha male in groups because everybody knows pulling girls isn't about looks (mostly)
>>
>>1053417
>Its how we determine who is the alpha male

The american is only dimly aware of this and is not used to it.
if you direct any of this at him there is going to be real trouble.

I have seen Brits get buthurt in America for getting called out for not tipping.
Shows of wealth are one way Americans assert dominance and failure to tip shows weakness in our culture.

It kinda depends. I grew up in a country town and pretty much all my childhood mates still live there, working as a tradie or something similar, playing footy and cricket, settling down with a local girl etc and most of them seem pretty happy with life. I'm a loud alcoholic Australian who dresses badly and mostly doesn't give a fuck about local culture.

Yeah the humour thing is pretty annoying. I spent a couple of months travelling around the U.S. and by the end we were actually seeking out Mexicans just to have someone to joke with.

When the old catholic lady selling mystery beans can make you laugh better than any American there is obviously something deeply different about American humour.

Unpopular opinion....but I love young American tourists.

I love Germans in general (the guys are such bros). I love Swedish women 'cause they're slutty but can hold a good conversation. Australians are great too 'cause they tend to be well-travelled but still know how to have a great night out.

In general, I don't really have anything against any specific countries. Like, America gets a bad rap but a lot of the good of friends I've met travelling (as well as some of the douchiest travellers I've ever met) have been American.

I also don't really like to budget all that much so I find I get along with Swiss, Australians, and Nordic countries for that reason. I budget travel because I like to go for longer periods and love the type of people that I met; but it's not out of necessity and it's refreshing to have people buy a round because they aren't on a high ramen diet

Culturally, we're very similar, so I don't really care about being lumped in with the Brits on those grounds.

French can be hit-or-miss in my opinion. Many of them are pretty nice. The girls are also pretty open-minded. Or just making noise and talking loudly when everyone is trying to watch TV in the common room. And so on.

I've rarely been abroad (I'm on this board for inspiration) but I have met a few nationalities.

I went to America and although it was Vegas so Brits aren't rare, the fact that I stepped slightly off the strip and suddenly everybody was interested in my accent was nice. One kindly old black gentleman asked me how the Queen was and I told him that last time I spoke to her she was great. "Good, I'm real happy for her. She's been around so long I can't imagine a world without her". Lovely chap.

I was on a bus and couldn't work out the accent of some obvious tourists. It sounded English, but spoken by somebody that learnt it from a deaf Chinese man. Turns out they were from Leeds and Newcastle. Funny blokes once I understood them. A touch obsessed with trying to get with some "Mexicunt" though. Real life "Sid The Sexist". "Fancy a shag, love?" "No!" "Well do you mind laying down while I have one then?"

Met some Germans too. Seriously cool. I was on my own and they invited me on to their table (three guys and two girls) while I was in the middle of my meal. They had a great sense of humour (breaking the stereotype quite nicely) and were interested in me and sharing their own stories. It was my last day and I seriously over-budgeted so I paid for all their meals for being so cool and gave a generous tip. I like to think I was a good ambassador for England that day.

Sat at the bar wearing my Philadelphia Eagles shirt and struck up a conversation with another Iggles fan. And by conversation I mean he yelled at me about Chip Kelly for twenty minutes and then left in a genuine rage. Left almost all of his drink too. The waitress couldn't stop laughing and bought me a beer.

I just like how Vegas was responsible for those moments. Despite all the big buildings, bright lights and loud noises you can still have some small, genuine connections with people that remind you that we really are much more important to each other than we often realise in our day to day lives.
