I was only mad because I figured it was tagging gone mad on e621 again, being reliant on what I assumed to be obscure information to prevent ease of searching. I knew Elites and Jackals as Elites and Jackals, so I was frustrated at getting cockblocked by alien language barriers and getting flashbacks to the many, many times the tags on e6 lacked leniency and led me on a snipe hunt.
I liked the old names for the aliens. They were generic, but they reflected a sort of basic human categorization system that I appreciated as a possible reality to first contact. The little subservient guys? Grunts. The big guys in charge? Elites. The weird doglike guys? Jackals. Sure, as diplomatic relations improve between humans and aliens I'd expect more PC language to develop, but for a military shooter generic labels worked well to convey concepts quickly.

Even if they only did use those names in the books that's not exactly obscure information. The Halo books are pretty damn popular, I mean that's how people even knew about Reach before it was talked about in any game.
Also it's not liked they replaced the old names, it's just the old names are treated as the really quick identification of troops while the "actual" names are used when there are lore explanations or diplomatic scenes.

I didn't finish it. The setting just didn't feel right to me. I tried so hard to be cold and isolating, but you fucking talk to people next to you all the damn time. The second one had a lot of talking to other players, but that still knew how to build atmosphere, and it was starting towards more of an action flavor anyways. 3 was just a shitty lost planet knock off. Not to mention they just fucking ruined the gunplay. That was one of the best parts about the older games, the guns were so unique, and the third one just threw the concept out the window.

I think the second game is best enjoyed as a very visceral and adrenaline fueled horror themed action film like Aliens, where you rock your way through the stages until you get to a walking cutscene and then sit back and relax until the next gauntlet.
