I think I took a little break from the imageboards around mid -08 and returned few years later.
From what I gather, many others did the same and disappeared around that time.
Not just talking about imageboards, but now that I think about it, everywhere the people who had previously been active, started dropping off around 07-08 and then returned few of years ago.
Not sure what was up with that, but it probably had something to do with people starting to near their 20s and real lives starting to take more time with school etc..
Also people started growing up and got rid of the internet culture for a while.

When I finally came back years later, /b/ wasn't funny anymore, just a cesspool of porn dumps and kids spamming memes for no reason. That was 4chan's Eternal September. We had many bumps of noobs before that point, but they all learned to lurk moar until they understood the culture. That retarded scientology protest brought in more people than could be dealt with, and all of the highly annoying "GONNA CHANGE DA WORLD!" mentality.
I was 20 when I first visited in late 2004. Now I'm old and mostly hide on /co/, the roguelike general in /vg/, the slowly degenerating /vr/, and here on /trash/. Despite the non-stop porn dumps, the conversation here reminds me of /b/ in the earlier days. It's like early /b/ on Furry Fridays, every day of the week, with not as many people screaming "Yiff in hell furfag!".
