good question, it could be sort of like a legion style mindset in the gem itself. It constantly desires to stay together and when something is injured or broken. They have a one minded will to reform no matter what. It's also possible that each shard of a whole gem is controlled by the central energy. So when it is cut off, it goes crazy.

Everything you don't like that occurs in the show is Sugar's fault. That's because every single thing that happens in the show is made a final decision by Sugar herself, as she is the supervisor over everything in the show. Storyboarders have very strict guidelines, and are only doing their job. They're drawing what they've been told to draw. The most 'influence' they'll have is suggesting a way to portray a certain scene to Sugar, and even that still comes down to Sugar herself.

That doesn't negate what I said. Storyboarders are there to portray a scene, that's their job. Then Sugar is the one who decides whether it's adequate or not, or how it should be changed. No matter how much storyboarders portray things how they want, they can't get it through without Sugar looking at it first and saying 'yeah thats good stuff'.
Sugar has allowed things like Zuke putting in a cute alien that she uses as somewhat of an icon for Peridot and sometimes herself. Sugar has not allowed Zuke to put in a scene where Peridot and Lapis start fucking each other with Lapis using her water powers as dildos, because it's ultimately Sugar's decision that's final.
