We’ve changed our shaders to lean back towards that flat, toon style.
New Graphics Options
SSAO and Bloom options have been added. They're off by default. This will improve performance on lower end machines, but for those of you with serious hardware, you can enable these to get the best looking experience. These options can be found in Settings.

That's easy. But it takes an anime tier understanding of science.
You see, scientists believe that millions of years ago, the earth was struck by an interstellar body traveling at high speed. That interstellar drive by caused massive damage to both bodies. The smaller one would become our moon. The impact intertwined the two, causing one to orbit the other as both rotated. The future earth and moon eventually reformed themselves through their rotation. However, the minerals that were in the earth's interior were brought to the surface by the impact, which ended up making the earth as fertile as it is. Which brings us to Remnant.
Remnant suffered a similar collision, though their moon's rotation ended up being slower than ours. The impact brought the dust that was in Remnants interior to the surface. Or perhaps the dust was in the moon's interior and was then sprinkled onto the surface of Remnant. Doesn't matter. What does matter is that because the moon of Remnant rotates slower, it has yet to fully reform, leaving some of it trailing behind in the remnants (Heh ) of the ring it used to be (much like Saturn's). That's also why it seems whole in some shots.
We only see one side of our moon because it's rotation speed perfectly matches that of its orbital speed. If that were not the case, we would see the other doses as well. The reason the moon looks whole sometimes is because it has rotated enough for the scattered debris to be hidden on the other side of it, leaving a more 'complete' look.
But this is all just some slightly plausible bullshit, so take it with a pound of salt.

Also the idea of the trail somehow rotating perfectly in sync with the moon so that it sometimes appears full makes no fucking sense. Especially because the fragments only ever appear on the right side of the moon, never the left, so it's like the moon does a half rotation then rotates BACK in the other direction.

Not necessarily. If we're seeing it near the end of its reconstruction, the fragments would be closer together rather than still spread around the planet.
I agree with your second point, though. Partly because ,as you said, we never see the debris on the left side and partly because the full moon is too clean to really support this. To be fair, the moon makes no fucking sense regardless. But like I said, anime level understanding of science. We all know the real reason the moon looks like that.

So how do I correctly portray a brother-sister relationship?
I'm writing something and I'm trying to make it clear that the two of them are extremely close even though they argue, but it just makes it look like there's sexual tension between them or some shit.

Thats pretty much how it goes, the only way to make it clear there isn't sexual tension is to make sure they're totally comfortable with any kind of contact, holding hands, that sort of thing. In a sexual tension between friends, that' cause blushing and reluctancey, but between brother and sister it'd be nothing to write home about
