On that note, does anyone have an opinion on CQ's current cast size? Too many characters, too few? I'm thinking I'll introduce two more next time and then put a cap on it indefinitely. Or at least until the current crop have been properly characterised and the story progressed. I can't keep people stuck on the first day much like this, it's just silly to pace it like this.

I think it's alright. We have our core team, some interesting side characters and some less-interesting ones, so we avoid the MQ-starting-clusterfuck of having too many too interesting characters right off the bat
Also, you 'restrict' our character options in a lot of those early scenes - 'restrict' meaning you give us scenes and options with only a handful of characters to interact with (I'm disregarding our free option here), and 'limiting' our options this way makes it easier to slowly get to know everybody.
which also, again looking at MQ's start, avoids us being totally overwhelmed by being thrown into a cafeteria with all the interesting people sitting apart from each other and us having to choose who to spend our limited time-frame with.
(note the '...'!
of course we always have the option to take more characters into a scene or change into a different scene, but the given situation is usually a good leading thread through character interactions.)

I was thinking once the core introductory stuff was out of the way, I'd start giving a lot more freedom with choices, including stats and combat stuff if people wanted. Unfortunately the intro stuff lasted way longer than I originally intended. Maybe the early restriction worked better, but I'll try and open it up once the next section is done.

I'm guessing it's the male characters? Yeah, I didn't sink as much thought into them as I probably should have. Piotr was pretty much a Soviet Russia joke made flesh that seemed entertaining at the time, but probably wasn't in that sense. And Burgund was just a case of 'Winchesters will forever be present being assholes somewhere'. I'll try and fix them up a bit...or just drop them altogether if people rather they didn't show up again.

They're not uninteresting, and I still want to get to know them - the others are just clearly more interesting and are thus higher on my priority list.

Well Inaba was retro-fitted Velvet, who I didn't want to delve too far into since I originally wrote this during Vol 2, so she was a bit of an afterthought too. She'll get more to her, since her relationship with Chester needs to be clearly established. The White Queen will get more development...or at least a better programmer.

On a seperate note, I'm still thinking over Alison's fighting style, weapon and semblance (The White Queen is effectively her weapon, but she's also her double, so there's room for a different one of sorts). Since I didn't give much choice for character customization, I'd be open to any suggestions...people selected 'cane' (dex) last time, but that doesn't necessarily mean it should be that.

The only problem with cane is that it's kind of already been done, with Ozpin, Roman and to a lesser extent Neo.
Really, Alison using Bartitsu as her fighting style strikes me as a appropriate, especially considering the grappling aspect...which will also tie into her future rivalry.

Not sure how it would work. It also treads on Weiss' theme a bit, which is the same reason I thought a sword of some kind would be out.
I was thinking maybe since Alison's family is old fashioned and characters like Jaune use simplistic archaic weaponry...maybe Alison could just use an old fashioned gun? Dueling pistols? Something like that? Just a thought.
Althought that might encroach on what I had planned for Dora. I need to think this through a bit more.
