My guess is that it probably involves repressed emotions during childhood and teenage (aka young teens trying to convince themselves and everyone else that they're super straight and manly in order to fit in, and actually end up convincing themselves for a while, only to discover the truth later on). Modern culture probably has something to do with it too. Nowadays it's more accepted for men to not be giant pillars of masculinity, because of all the women's equality stuff, blending or fading of social gender roles, and so on. So basically sexuality is a lot more "grey" now, and a lot of people might actually be bisexual, but they deny and suppress it because of social pressure, especially during the teenage years.
Myself, I've always been a bit queer, "beta" and somewhat feminine during my childhood and early teens, but I did like girls, and even had a couple of girlfriends in highschool.
