I finally figured out why hate the V3 opening. It's dissonant nearly the entire way through. The way Jeff sings half a note off from his daughter at every turn makes me cringe, and I think that's the point. It works for an opening, but it's not catchy in the slightest.

That's a fair question. It has lore in that it goes more deeply into what we saw. We learn that Bug and Kickboy had been in those situations for a very long time, and are deeply fucked up by them. We could perhaps infer this from the show, but here it is spelled out by the characters themselves. A nice bit of insight into their mind and pasts.

We learned that Merc's dad beat him and the 'ripped from the Earth, exposed to the Sun' line we discussed yesterday may be a reference to his mother. We also got a potential hint at Merc's semblance and we know that Emerald's semblance may have something to do with her eyes, which is already more lore than Neon gives.

Emerald may feel a little bad about it, but she's the one who tricked Pyrrha into killing Penny, and she's too devoted to the woman who killed Pyrrha herself and enacted the whole "Let's destroy Beacon and kill a fuck ton of innocent civilians" plan.
Merc, on the other hand, while more heartless on the surface, doesn't seem to have Emerald's sheer level of devotion to Cinder, and can probably be convinced to switch sides later on with the proper coaxing and the right recompense.
Emerald is the type of lackey that will take a bullet to the face to protect Cinder even if Cinder is an ungrateful cunt about it.
The Merc would let Cinder eat a lead sandwhich if it meant he remained unirked and he felt Cinder wasn't treating him with the respect he deserves.

Ruby's focus will be shared with JNR.
Weiss will only get one form of character development, and that's her relationship with her family. Other than that, she'll only be a vessel to show us Atlas.
Blake is probably going to get the least focus. We'll get a few scenes scattered around the volume showing hints as to what she's up to.

The character has the benefit of being both loved as a character, as well as fans loving her voice actress.
Barb gets a lot more face time with fans than the other girls do, simply because of her job outside of voicing the character.
