They're definitely worth it, also great for audio books, I read just about all of them as books when I was a kid and then recently when I wanted to go through some again I got them on audible.
As for spells there are the basics but then you start getting into the high level ones like "Cottontail Crackle" which does five d10 lightning damage in a circular area of 5. There's also "Bune Runes" for weapon enchantment which gives you a base +5 to all accuracy rolls and +10 to all damage rolls of the type of your choice. Pretty OP and that's not even getting into the Bune Sorcerer specific rituals like "Breed."

I'd argue that there are more, but they are somewhat formulaic in nature, there are a lot of characters and lots of worldbuilding that goes on. Also the first few in the series are really heavy set on explaining the main focal point of Redwall Abbey. Not sure about later books. When Jacques did write about specific races that was really cool, especially about the Badgers, who had their own history about living in the mountain.

Nobody is telling you that you need to look for a predator for yourself. I think a lot of people would like you to be open to it, but if you're really not comfortable with it, no one will try to make you.
