How the hell was she shoehorned? She was introduced as any other character, and she's had a pretty eventful story arc so far. She's more independent, she's stronger, and has much more character now. She's progressed greatly and she's a great character. It's clear that she doesn't JUST exist to be a love interest for Steven, although I'll agree it's part of her character.
