It requires Java 1.8.0_40 or any later version, so it's hardly outdated. I'll most likely be able to lower that requirement, for people still running older versions of Java, but it hasn't been a priority yet. But you will need Java for now, yeah, as I've never looked into bundling JREs or creating an installer (it just hasn't been an issue for me so far). Hopefully I can get around to that within a reasonable time frame, but I'm more focused on the game for now.
I tried to capture the feeling of a chat, with a few misspellings and poor use of capital letters and punctuation, but that's not to say I didn't screw up and let some unintended errors slip through. "3th" was very much the latter. Thanks!

Ah, yes, I wrote the dream scene from a male perspective only, and only added gender selection after that. Why? I couldn't tell you - but it's first on my list of stuff to fix. Hopefully I'll get it in the next update.
Hm, it's possible I made a mistake creating the .exe file. But it's supposed to have 1.8.0_40 (or Java 8 update 40, as Oracle calls it) as the minimum version, with no maximum. I'll take a look at that before I release the next version.

The writing seems fine, other than the few typos I listed below.
The text markup format seems straightforward enough and fairly easy to understand. Once you've got most of the program finished and ready for user-created content, a basic guide would be useful.
On the programming side of things, the only real error I can find is if you set the font size to a negative number, 0, or anything larger than 32767, the text doesn't display. It doesn't cause any real problems, and it's extremely unlikely that somebody would end up doing that unintentionally, but the program seemed to handle everything else I tried just fine, so I might as well report the one thing I did find.

Did not even consider that, good to know. I'll note it down and address is when I update the settings dialog.
Speaking of bugs, I used to have this weird issue where, if I switched font to Arial or certain other families, closed the game to save the settings, and then switched back to Verdana after opening it again, all text would be bold. It would just be bold. For no reason. I kind of forgot about it until just now, but I can't seem to recreate it any more. Guess it was an issue in the settings saving and/or loading methods, before I rewrote them for other reasons. You didn't encounter it, I take it?

I'm glad. I didn't actually have a clear plan starting out with this project, and it wasn't until the last week or two that started to change. The whole chat-thing just sort of happened as I was writing, so I worried it might not work well in practice.

Main things to remember to git gud:
1. The difficulty system is a lie. "Too Easy" is normal mode. "Easy" is Advanced mode. Use Too Easy to learn the game and unlock the other potential crewmembers.
2. Build resource modules first. start with Industry, then Food, then Science. If you've got operators, use them as soon as you've got the resource nodes operating. Speaking of which:
3. Know your crew. There are three roles and three backgrounds, and all crew fall into one of each, with advantages and disadvantages to them all.
4. Use the spacebar! Pausing the action can prevent that one guy getting swarmed from dying before you can click on the heal button.
5. Advance in straight lines. Funneling the monsters through corridors of death greatly decreases the odds of a small pod going unnoticed and wrecking your crystal.
