I think the reason why a lot of fan fusions usually don't look as good is because they don't feel as thought-out as the fusions in the show. If we compare the OP pic to Opal's, Sardonyx's, or even the original Rainbow Quartz's designs, it's pretty clear that the ones in the show have been given a lot of thought, and their designs work very well, and they compliment each of the Gems that fuse.
But unfortunately, until we see Steven fusing with a Gem (or in this case, Pearl) this is all we're stuck with.

To be fair, the first time Garnet was formed was kind of a mash between Ruby and Sapphire (especially the clothing) so you could justify a fanfusion with it being their first time.
And then there's also Steven's biology which could potentially affect his fusions with Gems. Would the fusion between him and Pearl still have four eyes, or would he (assuming the fusion is male) only have two? And if so, would there be anything special with the two eyes (like would one be slightly larger and the other slightly smaller, etc)?
