I thought it was a bit more pragmatic. Rose was fighting for Earth, but that probably didn't matter that much to a lot of gems. What did matter is that she was revolting against the wishes of homeworld, this probably brought a lot of dissatisfied gems over to her cause. Ruby and Sapphire obviously wanted to be allowed to fuse. I'm of the opinion that Rose was not the original owner of Pearl, and that Pearl came to her for her own reasons, which Rose would of course encourage.
I think Earth and the civil war in general was a surrogate cause for a lot of gems that just wanted to get away from homeworld. After the CG's won, they just kept up the habit. They fight gem monsters and the like, which are just the remnants of the war and homeworld's invasion.
Another thing I wonder if they will go into, is how many CG's were there, we know that at the founding of beach city there was only Rose, Pearl, Garnet, and Amathyst, but were there more than that stuck on earth 5000 years ago after the war was won? Did they all just break or degrade into monsters?
