I basically throw mine on the shelf right away, but there's nothing wrong with playing with your toys.
I take them out of package. I dont know if "play" is the right word, but I check out the articulation and figure out the right pose before putting in my display and never touching them again.
Of all the fucked up things people do, playing with toys is pretty basic.

I mostly fiddle with them putting them in dynamic poses.
If they're transformers, I'll switfch 'em back and forth between their various modes.
I don't do much of the story telling play style anymore, unless I'm taking photos or something.

I play with my Sentai mechs and kaiju vinyls when I'm bored, and recently the newer Mega Bloks figures. I also like to accordion SHF Bruce Lee around other figures to see if he can do it.
I'm okay with other people playing with their toys.
I give my Lego minifig's backstories and engage them in an ongoing plot.
Its mostly to keep track of rare pieces, maybe that powerup a hero or whatever.

I definitely do poses and pictures, especially when I get a new one, but they're mostly for display. I usually rearrange them around, though.
uh durr durr i just pose them, i guess that is playing with them.
but really...i have story arcs that have lasted for years. Currently finishing up a "Save the Smash Bros" arc. it all started where my mc wakes up in a rebooted world where Bowser, Mewtwo, Wreck-it Ralph and all the other evil smash bros now rule, alongside other villains and the evilized good Smash bros. the mc's current team have long separated, but joins a new team to reunite his own and the bring back the hero smash bros. also the villains are stealing other worlds with subspace bombs, which couldnt be stopped.
With the arc coming to a close, Bowser attempts to steal the rest of the planet earth then combine it with the other worlds to make his own. To make sure this plan doesnt fail, the smash villains recruit all the other bad guys to protect and live in the new world while the heroes recruit everyone they can (im digging through my boxes of old toys for an epic battle).
does anyone remember that video of some kid spinning an elaborate yarn with his toys? It had a lot of Pokemon, but also Bionicle, the Robo-Sapien, and pretty much everything else he had. I think it was a series of 45-minute videos on dailymotion or something.

I wish I could enjoy it like I used to when I was a kid. Sometimes I try it out when I'm alone after my GF leaves the apartment, but I just can't DO it.. It feels way too awkward and it's not any fun. (Plus my brain seems too logical and hung-up on small details for good stories to happen naturally.) I've tried getting figures that aren't actually existing characters FROM things with existing personalities and story lines, thinking that would help me not get hung up as easily, but it still doesn't really work all that well. The longest I've managed to do it is like 15 minutes tops, and it's only halfway entertaining.
The only ones I can actually play with anymore are my Army Men or my older beaten up figures that I don't care for anymore. They're expendable and in the case of the Army Men easily replaceable so I don't feel bad banging then up.
Anything else I'm afraid of scuffing, joints loosening, etc. and the most they get are fiddling and posing for display.

I fiddle with them hardcore, any poseable fig I get will be sitting on my desk for at least a week while I mindlessly play with it until I can figure out a proper way to pose it
I have to force myself to not touch my Wario WoN fig because of how much i fiddled with it, it feels super brittle now

I dont know. I was copying Subspace Emissary,, but i did have a back story where the Smash Bros came together in the past during a war which sort of involved the Avengers. The Hulk inspired their team name, and the war was very short on some faraway area so no one really knew about it til the current arc

I wish I could. I remember the days when I could dig all of my toys and play sets out and just lose myself and have long, amazing adventures with them. I can't even imagine having that much creativity and childlike wonder now.
