YOTH Soundwave just went 55% off at Canadian TRUs. A mold so nice I bought it thrice! (Actually I bought it four times but fuck if i'm opening the Hasbro one)

He's definitely lighter than his mold mates. Not sure if it's the clear plastic, but the plastic quality feels almost bootleg compared to the others. Also the build quality is noticeably worse. The others have tight joints, while some of his are loose--but not floppy. The thing that bothers me the most is that his shoulder canon is cast in the orange plastic that is seen on the forearms and shins while his blaster is cast in the clear plastic. It's a minor nitpick at best, but in cassette deck mode it's noticeable enough for me to not want to look at him from the back.

Time for the positives;
If you're into cool g2-esque wacky 90s colors, he's just random enough to be right down your alley, though he doesn't actually reference any g2/90s Soundwave figure in particular.
For transforming into a box, the change is the same old solid MP Soundwave transformation you know and love.
The shining star of the box set (in my opinion) are the cassettes. The only other way to get them was to order the 2 Takara sets, which is expensive or to have got the Hasbro Soundwave upon release because let's be realistic, you're definitely not paying $230 for something that retailed for $140. They're a nice stand-in for the solid colored cassettes if you don't already have them and a nice alternate colorswap if you do. I'd say the accessories make up about half of this set's value, so if you're comfortable with paying $80 for 5 cool cassettes and a sub-par Soundwave, feel free to pull the trigger.

If you're still looking for a MP Soundwave, save your money for one of the true blue releases. Even at 55% off, I only bought it because Soundwave is my favorite Transformer. If you're looking for cool ghost-cassettes, i'd pull the trigger and see what money you can get back from Soundwave on eBay or something.

What the fuck is going on with the Mini-Con guys in RiD?
Like In the show Crazybolt works with a torpedo guy, while his toy is for cyclones, or how Undertone in the show is a blade type while his toy is a cyclone type, or how only a few look anything like they do in product art?

Just how big is the disconnect between the guys working at different parts?

This is gonna be in every thread for the rest of Titan Wars, isn't it.
>>
>>5626512
They also didn't get BW until 97. You'd think a BW Megatron toy that sold out in 3 days and goes for $600 on eBay would tell Hasbro something.

Anyway, I think Takara has a lot of fond memories of BW; a lot of the designers that still work there started working for Takara around that time and it was the first TF design a lot of them did. Takara's always recognized BW more than Hasbro. And Japanese fans seem to enjoy various eras more than American fans.
>>
>>5626512
Yeah, the current designers are more F1 fans than they are BW. The focus became Headmasters and the Movie instead of Beast Wars.

I hope we eventually get some Beast-related Platinum sets or something.

To be fair, Hasbro knows people import MPs from Japan and this year's Botcon was BW themed.

I still think they dropped the ball by literally not having ONE SINGLE PRODUCT to acknowledge it. Put out a two-pack of the Cybertron beast Optimus and Megatron, at the very least.

It will be a bit late, but once we have the Mindwipe and Skullcruncher molds, we could use those bodies along with Sentinel Prime and Galvatron's headmasters to make a bat and alligator BW set.

The other thing that might be happening is that maybe phase 3 of the Prime Wars thing is beast-focused. I kinda doubt it, given how G1 the current team is, but it could be in the works.

Alpha Trion and Astrotrain are wasted slots for Voyager Triplechangers in a Headmasters line when Apeface and Snapdragon only get heads. Scourge is a waste of a Deluxe slot when only Horribull and Squeezeplay only get heads. The right opportunity to do Headmaster characters in a Headmaster line and they only go 10% of the way. Fuck off little bitch.
>>
>>5626636
As someone born long after G1 ended, I'd much rather have Alpha Trion and Sentinel Prime because they look way cooler than those generic headmaster losers. Some of the most forgettable TF designs ever. Also I'd rather have a line without the damn gimmick anyway.
>>
>>5626513

Yeah their gimmick may be unique, but visually they're totally generic. They're just blocks, and not in a charming way like the earlier G1 designs, more like they put no effort into his design. His ape mode barely feels like a beast , more like a stack of boxes rearranged differently, and his jet mode is that "Cybertronian/futuristic" style late G1 used to excuse lame vehicle modes. Its so nondescript. in all modes.
>>
>>5626651
So you'd rather we recycle the same 84/45/86 ad infinitum? Also if the other updated OG headmasters are anything to go by, I'm sure they'd update them a bit.
>>
>>5626651
Which is a perfect reason to update them with modern engineering which would make them more visually interesting and potentially fun toys.

But no, I guess an Alpha Trion as a lion for no reason and an Astrotrain with the worst train mode in Transformers history take precedence.
>>
>>5626653
If only the two are options, yes. Generic vague is worse than ones that have at least something interesting visually.
>>
>>5626653
I think I'm missing when we got a new mold Alpha Trion and G1 Sentinel Prime before. You tell me.

To be honest this far in the game in collecting I'm in it more for interesting and cool designs than unique characters. I'll buy a dozen of the same character so long as they do something interesting with the new design. People bemoan the 84/85 cars in CW, but Prowl was one of my favorites in that line.

It doesn't matter because the cartoon design was just some crap Floro dery drew up in 5 minutes, and doesn't deserve to get an actual toy. The TF team totally saved it by making it a much cooler design. Its probably one of the most interesting things coming out this year; to me at least. I want to slam a fucking Fort Max over his head repeatedly until he's bleeding and the fort max shatters like it would in a drop test, then take the splintered plastic and shove it in his eyes, just jam it deep in until they hit hit fucking brain; and while he's spasming in pain I'l take a large, thin splinter and shove it in his urethra. >>

I drank the "cool-aid" by not being born in the 80's I guess. Take away the Autobot symbol and Alpha Trion could've walked right out of Silverhawks or she-ra or some other 80's toon. Let's go further with that though.
Gold looks cool, but that's all it really does.
It's a shitty and weak metal that to the average consumer has had only the positive effect of introducing something that looked cool, but we all cling to having the original anyway because old people valued it too much.

CW deluxes are about the same size as more recent deluxes, but apparently Titans Return is looking to size them up just a bit to make sure the titanmasters aren't disporportionate. Same with the Voyagers, but leader classes are staying mostly the same.
>>
>>5626734
Except this doesn't seem halfassed at all. It'd be halfassed to just do the G1 cartoon and give him a shellforming alt-mode. this is an actual update in that it takes his design, tweeks it, and modernizes it; something that classics did in the first place until G1 fever made people demand things not be actual updates at all.

Astrotrain's counts if you want a wimpy bullet train and a deluxe-sized svelt bot instead of the roided out tank on rails the new one is.
AT's don't count because they aren't widely available or aren't actually transformers.
Same reasons people kept rallying for a new Scorponok during the titan class ballot; Because his only new figure was a botcon exclusive that wasn't big enough to really feel like G1 Scorponok to them.
>>
>>5626775
You know that toy never happened, right?
>>
>>5626778
They existed. Whatever reasons you have for not wanting to count them are completely irrelevant. The Horrocons have had absolutely zero toys since their originals. And the Scorponok comparison doesn't fit because there's not many characters that actually deserve that size of a toy so Scorponok wouldn't be taking the slot away from many other equally deserving characters.

>>
Wait a second:
>Scourge is a coffin with a cape
>Mindwipe is a bat with superpowers

>>
>>5626793
The toy doesn't count because it never existed, therefore never official. And the comic that panel is from isn't canon either. Hasbro just felt like giving a nod to this thing that almost happened, which I guess they think is more important than being faithful to the character that actually did exist.
>>
>>5626800
If we are going by the G1 Cartoon, Alpha Trion is a blank slate as far as altmode, so how is that a lack of faith?
>>
>>5626786
They existed but were shit or not widely available.

And the Scorponok comparison DOES fit, for both of them in fact, because one of the things people keep complaining about when it comes to the triple changers is that they should be larger than everyone else.
That is like the most consistent point I keep seeing whenever someone talks about them.

Not only that, Alpha Trion is considered an important character by a lot of people since he's prime's mentor, so having a big character not have any decent toys is pretty shitty too.
>>
>>5626802
How come the tiny dudes were not robot/vehicle with SD proportions?
The original tiny headmasters were pretty simple already.
>>
>>5626800
>more important than being faithful to the character that actually did exist.
You mean a character that less people remember than alpha trion and would sit harder on the shelves?
>>
>>5626674
I'd like an Alpha Trion and Astrotrain as well as Apeface and Snapdragon, but these are just fucking horrible. I think no matter what character they did they would have fucked it up this badly, so it hardly matters which one, other than making it less likely for them to do another version of them any time soon.
I honestly prefer my BotCon Alpha Trion to this.

>>5626676
They both look like piles of stuff. That they failed to do any better 30 years later is really pathetic.

>>5626778
You're taking your opinion and treating it like objective reality.
Exclusives are rarely difficult to obtain. There are over 2,000 BotCon Scorponoks, and 1,400 Alpha Trions. Alpha Trion's market price may be high, but Scorponok's isn't.

>>5626800
The comic is canon, but it's still a tiny corner of the character. The fact that it's the ONLY alt mode he's ever shown to have doesn't change the fact that in the bigger picture it's not very significant.

Anyway, keep being insistent on narrow perspectives. I just realized today that I'm retarded, but slightly less retarded than you guys, so maybe there's still hope for me.

Because my perspective isn't narrow. I guess there's still a lot of the same loaded language where I express opinion as fact and generalize, but then I already admitted I'm retarded, just more well-informed, and somewhat willing to change perspective.

When someone says convention toys don't count because they're not widely accessible, it's because they'd prefer it not to be that way.
I didn't say Alpha Trion's lion mode "doesn't count", I just said that it's less significant. If we want G1 Alpha Trion, he's a different form from the one that turns into a lion anyway. I mean that's kind of obvious. I don't even have a problem with him having a lion mode. (I have a problem with a less-inexperienced design team attempting the challenging task of doing a triple-changer which necessitates compromise, on a character that doesn't need it, so that we get an inferior result.)

It's theoretically possible to have a robot mode that looks like the G1 cartoon and still have a lion alt mode, but TR isn't that, so it is different. I mean clearly it's meant to be him, but it's a huge redesign, not even on par with the difference between original and TR Powermaster Prime.

A lot of people, especially in the West, can't into SD properly. They think it just involves shrinking the body and leaving the head the same size, which is why the results are kind of ugly like the Battle Tactics app. Or they get all the theoretical bits correct but can't make the parts work together, ending up like pic related.

It would be difficult to make an okay-looking SD body for headmasters that are also meant to work on full size bodies, and have it look coherent. Unless you forego the typical SD concepts, in which case fuck it let's be uggo.

>A lot of people, especially in the West, can't into SD properly
Finally someone gets it!

what i dont like are people who want non-SDs of SD toys. there's alot of people who want Mastermade Metroplex but with a smaller head, not realizing that his body itself is sculpted to be stubby and cute, so a small head would look off

The helmet and collar alone on the body are meant to look like the original, not just the headmaster, so yes, at least in superficial ways.

or maybe it will have a small influence, but only on products no sooner than a year from now, or only in the longer run, or only towards collector lines like Masterpiece.

It isn't supposed to. He's a robo-ape. Robo beasts (see: original Predacons and Dinobots) are far, FAR more interesting a concept than a 'bot that "looks as close to an animal as you can get."

If you want a more beast type mode, wait for the upcoming MP-32. Or buy those cheap plastic lions/giraffes/horses from Target/TrU or something.

>They're totally generic

No, realistic animal toys are generic. Robo-animals are interesting.

While his arm articulation is limited by the cannon, I wouldn't say that his robot mode 'suffered'. Didn't own the original toy so can't compare, but he's tall, hefty, detailed (he even has a sculpted spark casing underneath his chestplate) and decently poseable in three of his four limbs. Megs can even tilt his head, so he can sneer down at his enemies or his pitiful Mini-con slaves.

It is a shame his antlers don't stick out, but you can see them underneath the tank mode from the front and they do look about ready to eat up any poor soul he drives over.

The movie line isn't part of the CHUG lines. I get what you're trying to say, but you're not making any valid points. You're looking at it from the perspective of the characters you want and not from the reality of what they think will sell more.
>>
>>5627376

Horri-bull is dead in IDW. Having said that, the fact that he's dead comes up as a plot-point more often than most dead guys.

He got his head exploded by a microchip inside it, after the war. Making his toy just a head when his head was exploded is pretty lulz. Similarly Flywheels was killed by being jammed head-first into Tesarus' tummy-grinder, because his tank-tread feet made it impossible to do the other way, which was how he normally did it. Squeezeplay has turned up fairly frequently, but mostly as part of larger groups of Decepticons.
>>
>>5627378
Ironically this design team DOESN'T do that endless Bumblebee shit. Yeah we still get giant sized versions and repaints, but for the most part no more than Grimlock or Optimus. Meanwhile, the old design team put something like four deluxe Bumblebees in the ROTF line alone, wasted a slot on a Leader Bumblebee, created two different non-standard size class giant Bee figures, and more. Its really wound down.

>so i dont know if i wanna get this.
I reccomend it, especially since the original toy has nostalgic value to you.

The toy is a lot better in hand, as it seems most pics online can't pose this mold for shit. In person, his his shoulders aren't as bad as they look, and legs don't seem as stiff, if you pose him well.

I personally bought Armada Megatron over the G1 version because it has a smaller (and pretty badass) head that makes the whole mold look more proportionate and imposing.

The G1 version has a bigass head that makes the mold look cartoony and goofy by comparison, while the Armada one looks pretty brutal.

People will buy beast figures as long as they're cool. The tricky thing is that a lot of recent beast figures have been terrible, or unappealing. I like my Rattrap figure, but his beast mode is straight out of the 90's gross-out era of toys. But stuff like dinos almost always sell unless they're total wrecks like AoE Slash.

disliking Apeface's beast mode=/ I hate all robo beasts

I like robo beast modes a lot, but I hate the compromises made to make the Horrorcons tripplechangers, and I doubt this new team could do much better. I'd rather they drop the vehicle mode, or make the ape mode a priority, but people would probably be upset about it. As is the horoorcon beast modes look like something you could cobble together out of any figure by just adding a beast head. It reminds me of Gigatron's more odd modes, like his elephant and griffon modes.

If it looked like Iron Kong or some other zoids-like design, I'd be all for it.

Even an LG-EX only goes so far, the LG-EX scourge's head reminds me of a cross between an optimus head (accurate) and the unicorn gundam in destroy mode (not accurate).

Its why as >>5627529 said best, we get the one that looks better to us, otherwise we're literally arguing over kids toys.

Faults on the mp's I can totally understand, the fact an mp+ line was made to fix that has made me realize how terrible we've become as a fan base.

Of course that's for the japanese audience and their preference which makes the rest of us look less autistic.

>>5627549
So um...what else do I refer to the collectors line masterpiece or any of the modern interpretations, I use "chug" as anything in the generations like is a chug by default, unless its in the current tv show which then doesn't count as a chug like the TAV/rid2015 line.

Please enlighten me, and on that matter what do I refer bikes from cars without triggering a buzzword?

I'm not looking for a fight, I'm trying to better understand us.

Man Armada would've been a fantastic 13-26 episode series, instead of a mediocre 52 episode series.

Actually that goes for a lot of the UT stuff. I'd love an anniversary Armada movie release, trimming all the fat and making 3 good movies with some improved animation.

You're not the first to note the price anon.

I dread when Australia brings up the prices, currently the standard price is $29.99 with the lowest being $25aud, we already pay too much for everything as it is, I don't wantto import fucking everything transformer related but they keep doing this shit

The Anime colors Red alert is a criminal example of falling on the sword of show accuracy So cartoon accurate they actually PAINTED OVER the headlights. Why?

Like I said, please enlighten me on what words I should be using, you seem to be rather antagonistic.

Shall I refer them as collectors lines vs literal toys, I feel like I'm disrespecting the brand that way.

>>5627571
This is why I stopped myself buying this edition, true show accuracy has its draw backs, the point of the highlights was to homage BOTH toy and g1 while giving it some pop at the same time.

I'm glad they aren't standard releases

Basically all the collector's lines arranged into a ridiculous acronym.

Some people get really anal about the abbreviation CHUG for some reason. Then insist you call them classics despite only 1 line actually being that, and not really. Personally I've never liked the term "Classics"; the line wasn't called classics on the packaging, it was just "Transformers Robots in Disguise". Obviously that's confusing with the 5 or so other RiD lines. But it was just Transformers. I hate making up names for lines but I get why classics stuck. I'm fine with just referring as the entire line as Generations.

I know your wife is being CHUG'd this very second by her bull, but you'd rather complain on a child's toy board.
>>
>>5627587
Not...really collectors line, they appeal to collectors as they're generally based on a g1 standard and (usually with takara's efforts) they can be really slathered in paint apps, but they're still toys, toy that happen to please alot of collectors.

I'm a proud chug collector.

>>5627588
Ah, I see now, I don't hang around on forums so I'm a bit behind the times, guess I should call them by their sku's, generations.

Actually I'll swap and change as I go, freedom of speech afterall

>>5627590
Seen armada before?

He's looking at unicron if I remember correctly, hence why >>5627521 has him going all out
>>
>>5627588
Classics was apparently the internal name for the line, so people just used that.

Dunno... if it included all the collector lines so far it'd be CHUGULCWUW

It's pronounced Chugle-coo-woo

>>5627603
For the longest time I thought CW/TR where labelled generations, too, but I just noticed they aren't.

also you forgot Reveal the Shield.
>>
>>5627560
Is there some kind of list of the non shit UT episodes that can be watched in an enjoyable yet coherent way without all the shit episodes?

I watched Armada when I was a kid and I remember some episodes actually being cool, mostly at the end when the Unicron shenanigans started. Energon and Cybertron felt so stupid from the few episodes I watched though that I never even gave these series a try.

>>5627603

We need a new name, "generations" matches store sku's, chugs really encompasses 4 lines (2 of them being literal redeco's from takara and hasbro).

I couldn't of called them Chugu when united first came around could I?
