That's the idol from the story. A bunch of mulattos were dancing around with those and trying to summon Cthulhu.
I'm more just talking about how when i first read the books it was legitimately creepy and strange to read the descriptions of these creatures and trying to piece together what they looked like in my head, but the moment i saw an actual picture of it that felt like it spoiled so much of the story.
The Mi-Go are the best example i could thing of, fucking half crustacean and half fungoid aliens that flew through space, those sounded nearly nightmarishly beyond understanding in the book. But then the rpg makes them a villain you fight and put in a picture of them.
It seems like every piece of media about lovecrafts books just spoil them more and more instead of making them better.

We need easily identifiable symbols to plaster our internet fandom hugboxes with so everybody knows we're special members and found the niche in which we belong.

While not Lovecraft, True Detective season one took a good deal of cues from Chambers and Ligotti, whose writings are an inspiration for/inspired by Lovecraft.
Even without directly reading his writing, (which you should if you read at all/enjoy horror.) you've no doubt consumed media that has been deeply influenced by Lovecraft.
